The Newcastle Rescue Northstars are excited to reveal their new logo that is part of a brand refresh for the 2020 AIHL season.
The new logo keeps elements that are familiar with the Northstars brand and are a nod to Newcastle's heritage, but is also presented with a contemporary feel.
Warren Apps, Logan Knight and the team at Coordinate, the Canberra-based creative agency, offered to lead the brand refresh ensuring that they captured the culture of the club in the new logo.
During their initial reviews into the Northstars brand, Coordinate said the fans’ commitment and strong connection to the club was overwhelming and an inspiration.
“Given I’ve now had the chance to spend some time up your way, I can see just how committed your fans are to the club and how much belonging there is there,” said Coordinate's director Warren Apps.
“That’s something to be really proud of but it’s also important that any re-branding doesn’t threaten it. People wear the current logo with pride and I think this is a classic case of brand evolution, not revolution.”
The design by Coordinate is reliant on the capitalised N to show strength, coupled with the star positioned to show impact.
“We’ve used the N (capitalised to show strength) and coupled it with a star (pretty obvious choice) but we’ve simplified it so it’s on trend with where most large sports brands are moving,” Apps said.
“It’s still encased in a puck type shield but in a stronger, more modern presentation with more flexibility ."
The new logo is reminiscent of the original North Stars jersey from 1980, which was based off of the NHL's Minnesota North Stars.
The Northstars will be releasing their new look jerseys before the start of the 2020 AIHL season and will announce the release on all Northstars social media channels in the coming weeks.
