Pagett pleased with Brave debut |

In a squad with an impressive line-up boasting the names of Stephen Blunden and David Dunwoodie, the Australian ice hockey version of household names household names in Mark Rummukainen and Jordan Gavin, and first time imports of the likes of Kelly Geoffrey, Scott Pitt and Josh Unice all impressing the league, you would be excused if you may not be familiar with the name Ben Pagett. However, having worked with the Canberra Knights from 2011 as the club’s physio before taking a similar role with the CBR Brave as well as joining the playing squad for the teams’ inaugural season, Pagett is a familiar face around Canberra’s rink. Although he didn’t see any ice time in 2014, Pagett was once again named in the squad for the 2015 season, something that he describes as an honour despite the limited game time. “I have dressed for every game this year so far which is great,” Pagett said. “It's always an honour to put on the Brave jersey and even more so at home. Walking out in front of a packed Brave Cave crowd is amazing. Dressing as an optional player has its highs and lows, as you have to prepare yourself to be ready to go on if given the call so you pump yourself up and switch on to the game." "If the game doesn't really go to plan and the coach doesn't put me in because it's a close game or we are receiving too many penalty minutes and the special teams pretty much dominate the ice time, then that's just the way it is. I would be lying if I didn't say it's a letdown but it's understandable." However, on Saturday May 23, Pagett got his chance, debuting against the Adelaide Adrenaline in front of the CBR Brave home fans at Phillip Swimming & Ice Skating Centre. It was a moment a long time coming for the 30-year old Pagett who remembered his first AIHL shift fondly. "I pinned one of their forwards into the corner and wrestled the puck free. We maintained possession and broke out up the ice,” Pagett started. “It felt real. I skated hard, back-checked and I changed on the fly with James Byers. It was a good feeling; I did my job. The boys were all giving me slaps on the back and psyched me up for the next one." Although a proud Queenslander, Pagett has called Canberra his home since high school and has been embraced by the hometown fans. In fact, when taking the ice for the first time in AIHL action, Pagett said he could hear the personal support from the crowd. “I knew there were a lot of people in the rink that I knew personally,” Pagett said. “My mum was there, which was important, and several friends I have made through hockey who have seen me sit on the bench for several games." The Brave won the game comfortably against the Adrenaline, taking the game 8-3 and Pagett only had the last eight minutes of the game to make use of his opportunity. Although he didn’t trouble the scorers, Pagett was happy with his performance and said his teammates showed their support as well. "It was awesome,” Pagett said. “Jordo (Gavin) came up to me on the ice and patted me on the back and said, 'Good job, Benjamin! There you go buddy!' It was good to be on the ice when the game finished. We have had a bit of history against Adelaide, so it was great to get the win. The boys, the staff and the whole organisation were pumped." Pagett has another opportunity to add to his game tally this weekend as the CBR Brave take on the Sydney Ice Dogs on Saturday June 6 at 5:30pm at the Phillip Swimming & Ice Skating Centre. |
