The Melbourne Mustangs officially launched their 2015 campaign this weekend at the official season launch.
After winning the minor premiership and AIHL Championship, Mustangs’ president John Belic spoke at the event about the club coming of age.
“Here we are at the moment, the 2014 H Newman Reid Trophy winner and the 2014 Goodall Cup Champions, with a week left to savour the feeling, because as soon as the puck drops next Sunday marking the start of our first game of the 2015 season, all past success are washed away and we are all even,” Belic said. “We are not underdogs any more, other teams now have us in their sights and we are the ones to beat.”
The team enter the season riding a wave of good will from sponsors with naming rights sponsor MOAT: Mental Health Services returning for a fifth season and twenty players already sponsored for the season ahead.
“We’ve been naming rights sponsors of the Mustangs for five years now,” MOAT director Bryan Jeffrey said. “It’s been great being part of the family. It was great to be part of the family that lifted the Goodall cup last season.”
The Mustangs have a new face amongst the coaching staff this season with AIJHL Melbourne Whalers coach Michael “Flatsy” Flaherty coming in as assistant coach replacing club stalwart Mark Connolly.
The team welcomes back imports Patrick O’Kane, Victor Gibbs Sjödin and Jeff Grant and also 28-year old forward Vadim Virjassov, who returns to the club after a season with HC Viking in the Estonian National League.
“Everybody's back, we’re ready to go, it’s interesting coming into a season where we are no longer flying under the radar; we’re the guys with the targets on our backs,” coach Brad Vigon said.
The club also announced the signing of new import and former NCAA forward Drew Akins.
The 29-year old was a member of the University of Minnesota-Duluth team that took the NCAA WCHL Championship in 2008-09 before captaining the teamed the following year.
He turned pro with the Gwinnett Gladiators in the ECHL in 2009-10 and has since played in the CHL, Polish league and SPHL, where he currently plays with the Huntsville Havoc.
The team also announced that it’s Goodall Cup winning leadership team will return with Sean Jones returning as captain and Pat O’Kane and Brendan McDowell wearing the A’s.
“We’ve been training hard, getting ready to get into the season and we can’t wait, so hopefully we have another successful year,” Jones said.
The roster remains stable from last year with with Andrew Fitzgerald returning from injured reserve. The team adds junior development players Robbie Rama, Corey Stringer and Jack Heyes, who will shadow goaltenders Fraser Carson & Michael James.
The Melbourne Mustangs play their first home game against the Sydney Ice Dogs on April 26 at 4pm. The club will also be unveiling the 2014 Championship banner with festivities starting at 3pm at the Medibank Icehouse. |
