Malloy stars as Mighty Roos down Serbia for first 2015 World Champs win |

Led by a starring performance from new Newcastle North Stars recruit Robert Malloy, the Australian Mighty Roos claimed a 4:3 shootout win against Serbia, the team’s first win for the tournament.
The win sees Australia still in last place on the ladder but with the potential to move as high as third should they beat Iceland tomorrow morning (6am AEST, 5:30am ACST, 4am AWST) in what will be a must-win game.
The team’s hopes of claiming gold evaporated after Romania remained undefeated after three games.
It was an even game from the outset with Malloy claiming the early goal just over two-and-a-half minutes in, assisted by alternate captain Greg Oddy and CBR Brave recruit David Dunwoodie.
Serbia hit back just before midway through the period, with the competition’s leading scorer Marko Sretovic getting the Europeans on the board with a shorthanded goal, tying it up at 1-all.
The Melbourne Mustangs’ Brendan McDowell gave the Australians the lead with his first goal of the tournament of Malloy seven minutes into the second.
The Roos would have felt like that should have been the second period score, but Serbia’s Dimitrije Filipovic tied it up with only three seconds remaining in the second.
It was another early goal in the third from Oddy, assisted by Malloy and Adelaide Adrenaline teammate Wehebe Darge that gave Australia the go-ahead for the third time in the game. But a Serbian goal from Milos Babic ensured the game went to overtime.
After a scoreless overtime, it was down to a shootout and Brendan McDowell delivered with the first shot for Australia, beating Arsenije Rankovic to put Australia ahead.
Two saved shots meant Australia was close to victory, but Sretovic erased the Australian advantage.
But the day was Malloy’s.
Having had a hand in every Australian goal, Malloy slotted his goal before Fraser Carson held strong for Australia to win.
Melbourne Mustangs goaltender Carson was strong between the pipes, making 33 saves from 36 shots for a .917 save percentage for the game, lifting his overall save percentage for the tournament to .854.
Australia will be back in action tomorrow (Saturday) morning at 6am AEST/5:30am ACST/4am AWST against hosts Iceland, before a rest day. The Mighty Roos will close out their round robin schedule with a face off against Belgium in a game that will likely decide if Australia remains in Division 2 Group A on Monday morning at 2:30am AEST/2am ACST/12:30am AWST. |
