Gutsy Bears outlast Thunder in shootout win |

The Sydney Bears recorded their first win of the year in a gutsy performance at the Macquarie Ice Rink, defeating Perth Thunder 2-1 in a shootout.
The Bears got on the board first, thanks to a power play goal by defenceman Nick Rivait. Perth tied themselves up with several penalties in the first period, ultimately resulting in a 5-on-3 power play opportunity for the Bears.

The Thunder came into the contest missing a pair of key players: Captain Jamie Woodman was out with an illness, and leading scorer Ben Breault, missed the game due to a one game suspension for checking from behind in the Sydney Ice Dogs Saturday game.
The second period provided some redemption for the Thunder as the only team to capitalise on end-to-end hockey, tying the game with a goal from Kieran Webster.
Despite dominating the third period, the Bears were unable to get the go-ahead goal and so the two sides remain tied 1-1 at the end of regulation, taking the game to a shootout in front of a vocal crowd.
Tommy Landa and Jackson Brewer were the shootout heroes for the Bears with goalie Anthony Kimlin turning away two of the three Perth Thunder shooters to record the 2-1 win.
Bears’ Head Coach Ron Kuprowsky, was full of praise for his resurgent Bears.
“It’s good to get the monkey off our back and finally get a couple of points on the board, said Kuprowsky.
“The boys are feeling great and it was nice to see the birthday boy (Nick Rivait) get the goal in the shootout.”
Both goaltenders had a noticeable effect for their teams. Bear’s goalie Anthony Kimlin was sharp in between the pipes – stopping 24 shots on the night – including a number of great glove saves in the first period. Similarly, Perth’s net minder Peter Di Salvo, was also busy at the other end of the ice, stopping 30 shots, including 12 shots in a frantic final period.
“The Thunder put up a great fight tonight, they’re a top notch team and they’re going to have a great season,” said Kuprowsky.
The win caps off a memorable weekend for the Sydney Bears, who also celebrated Vlad Rubes’ 400 AIHL point on Saturday night in a 5-2 loss to the Newcastle Northstars.
The Bears will be back in action this Saturday at the Macquarie Ice Rink when they host the 2016 Goodall Cup runners-up the CBR Brave.
The Thunder, however, head home and enjoy a weekend off to rest and repair before they host the Sydney Bears in what will be a hotly contested Mother’s Day rematch in Perth. |
