The Melbourne Ice have swept their home weekend against Adelaide with an impressive 8-5 win in front of a large home crowd at O’Brien Group Arena on Sunday night.
A hattrick from Kristoffer Backman, including the game-winning penalty shot goal as part of a five-point night (3 goals, 2 assists), proved the difference in a high-scoring affair, while Cameron Critchlow scored four goals for the Adrenaline as the visitors managed to score five times on just 14 shots.

Both teams exchanged quick goals in the first period, with the majority of the chances going in favour of Adelaide as Cameron Critchlow scored his first for the Adrenaline, and Mitch Humphries tying it soon after.
With both teams giving up chances, Critchlow was the one who again took advantage, giving Adelaide the lead once more.
Melbourne were given the opportunity to get the game even again before the end of the opening period, with Kristoffer Backman firing one past Peter King, who had looked solid in net for his side.
The Ice were given another early chance to take the lead after a hooking call turned into a penalty shot for Mitch Humphries, who was beaten by Peter King to keep his team in the game with the score at 2-2.
The Ice pulled ahead with just over a minute remaining, with Joey Hughes picking up a rebound to give the home team the lead, however Adelaide came out and tied the game up at three with an early goal from Cameron Critchlow.
Chris Wong was able to find the back of the net and give his team the lead with just under 15 minutes remaining, before Backman opened the floodgates for his team, scoring two in the third to give him a hat trick and his team a three goal lead.
Paul Baranzelli, Cole McMillan, Critchlow and Hughes all scored in the dying minutes to take the final score to 8-5.
The Ice will look to continue their unbeaten run against the Northstars and Bears next weekend, while Adrenaline return home for a weekend series against the Ice Dogs. |
