Newcastle North Stars goalie Dayne Davis was crowned the AIHL’s Most Valuable Player of the 2016 Final series. Davis accepted the award after helping his side clinch the Goodall Cup in the narrow 2-1 Grand Final victory over the CBR Brave. And while the 2016 Goodall Cup featured the third and fourth ranked teams heading into the finals weekend, the intensity of the low scoring, tight-checking final meant that both goalies had big roles to play for their respective teams. Davis was on top of his game all weekend. He was instrumental in the North Stars overtime semi-final win over the Perth Thunder and, in championship game, he shut down the Brave’s sharp shooters in a hectic final period to preserve the North Stars one-goal lead. During the finals series, Davis stopped 53 of 56 shots for an eye-popping .946% save percentage. “He’s been so big for us all year,” North Stars captain Robert Malloy said. “He (Davis) went through a lot of adversity early in the season and he came back stronger than ever.” As a mark of respect, Davis was the second North Stars player to raise the Goodall Cup, after Malloy had accepted the Cup on behalf of the North Stars. “It an understatement to say how proud I am of him and just how much he has contributed on and off the ice this year,” Malloy said. The award caps off a huge season for Davis, setting career high for games played in the regular season (25) and goals against average (2.41). Davis was part of the North Stars 2015 winning squad, which makes him the first goalie to win back-to-back titles since the Melbourne Ice’s Stuart Denman in 2011-2012. |
