The Newcastle North Stars tuned up for the AIHL Finals with a 7-0 win over the Adelaide Adrenaline at Hunter Ice Skating Stadium on Saturday night.
The North Stars were dominant, taking 52 shots to the Adrenaline’s 13 throughout the game with Australian Beau Taylor starring with four goals.
The first period set the tone for the night with Newcastle second line kicking off the goal scoring 98 seconds into the match through Josh Harris.
Two more goals from the North Stars through Scott Swiston and Taylor completed a strong opening period.
It was a tough night for the Adrenaline, unable to keep possession and getting just two shots on target to the North Stars’ 23 in the first.
“We want to go into the playoff weekend high on confidence and having faith that our systems are working,” Newcastle Coach Andrew Petrie said when asked about the team’s dominant offensive performance.
The start of the second period saw Taylor’s second and third goals of the night, split by Shane Southwood’s first of the season.
It was a penalty heavy period with a scuffle leading to Adrenaline defenceman Sean Greer and North Stars rookie Liam Manwarring taking an early shower.
Petrie credited Beau’s night to the result of some great line chemistry and set plays. saying “tonight everything paid off”.
Tempers seems to settle as the third period went by with both teams only exchanging inconsequential penalties before Beau Taylor went back for one more closing his night out with four goals and one assist.
Adrenaline Club President Eric Balnar was disappointed in the loss.
“We’re better than this,” he said. “To not show up today just because we are out of the finals is a pretty poor excuse. Nobody came prepared to play, we weren’t prepared. Not one person put their hand up when we asked who got up this morning ready to play hockey.”
While on the home bench, Petrie praised his team’s performance.
“That was a complete game for us from start to finish, and as a coaching staff we are really pleased with that effort,” he said. “From the mid-season point onwards our discipline has been exceptional and our PK has been on point all season long.”
While this weekend spells the end of Adrenalines 2016 Goodall Cup campaign, while the win secured Newcastle third place on the ladder meaning they will play off against Perth Thunder next Saturday with the hope of progressing through to the final for a chance to defend the AIHL Championship they won last year. |
