Déjà vu as Thunder edge Ice |

After a tight 5-4 shootout victory against the top of the table Melbourne Ice on Saturday, it was a case of déjà vu for the Perth Thunder in the second game of the weekend’s double header at Perth Ice Arena on Sunday night. The home side again took a 5-4 victory and four points from the weekend with Thunder import Michael Dorr the only player to score in the shootout, extending its winning streak to an equal club record of eight. The Ice came out hard, seeking redemption for Saturday’s narrow loss and both the tempo and physicality were high in the early stages. Shots on net soon started to flow for both sides and the Thunder’s Thomas Heemskerk and Ice’s Jaden Pine-Murphy were put to work between the pipes early on. A scoreless first period was soon contrasted by a scoring frenzy in the second. Ben Breault powered through the Ice defence to score short handed to put the Thunder 1-0 up in the contest. An Ice penalty and ensuing Thunder power play not long after saw Breault get his second after a slick one timer from the point and by midway through the second, the Thunder had a 2-0 lead. Not content with a two goal deficit in any respect, the Ice responded with force, piling on three consecutive goals. Two came from the stick of Matt Armstrong and one from Liam Webster for the Ice hit the locker rooms at the end of the second with a 3-2 lead. The Perth Ice Arena crowd helped lift the Thunder in the second and a Jessyko Bernard goal early in the period lit up the arena. This was followed soon after by a beautiful backhand from Michael Dorr and the Thunder were back on top with a 4-3 lead. The advantage was short lived however, with the Ice’s Chris Yule making a slick play to level things up again at 4-all. At the end of regulation, the scoreline was once again tied and a shootout followed. Thunder’s Michael Dorr was the hero of the day for the Perth Thunder, with his opening shot being the only score in the final shootout, giving the Thunder a 5-4 victory. Thunder coach Dave Kenway was pleased with the weekend’s results and always knew the games between the two top sides were going to be tight. “The style of both the teams dictates the fact that these were going to be tight games,” he said. Kenway was also pleased that his side managed to find the ‘spark’ they needed heading into the third period. “The boys drop their heads a bit when you get scored on and are losing the game,” he said. “They managed to find that spark, get that momentum shift and take it to the Melbourne Ice.” Melbourne Ice Assistant Coach Steve Laforet said they were really happy with the way the Ice played across the weekend. “Coming to Perth and playing the Thunder is always tough,” he said. “They are a good team, a big team with some good imports. We can’t really say much about our penalty kill and power play. The way that the boys played really stepped up and we’ll just review the games, see where we went wrong and fix our mistakes.” The Perth Thunder is back on the road again next week for an east coast weekend, lining up against the Ice Dogs in Sydney on Saturday and making their way up to Newcastle for a match up with the North Stars on Sunday. The Ice is back on home ice at the O’Brien Group Arena for a double header against the fourth placed CBR Brave. |
