The CBR Brave saw off the Sydney Bears in another fierce encounter, emerging with a 6-4 win at the Phillip Swimming & Ice Skating Centre on Sunday night. The Brave opened the scoring early in the first period, with Geordie Wudrick scoring a power play goal 29 seconds into the game. The Brave continued the pressure and were rewarded with a 2-0 lead shortly after through Tyler Kubara. The Sydney Bears didn’t panic, continuing to grind away and were rewarded late in the first period after Billy Cliff forced a defensive miscue from the Brave and Richard Tesarik caught young Brave goalie Alex Tetreault out on the wrap around. The second period saw plenty of end to end action, with both defensive cores working hard to shut down the attack of the other. It wasn’t until halfway through the second that we saw Casey Kubara score on a deflection from a diving Brian Funes. While the Bears were quick to respond, with Cameron Todd scoring less than a minute later to reduce the deficit to one goal, Casey Kubara scored his second with just 28 seconds left in the second. The third period started with a bang from the Bears, with two goals in two minutes to put the Brave on the back foot and erase the difference. A solo effort from Brian Funes and a Michael Schlamp laser from the face-off circle saw the Bears tie it up and looking the better of the two sides. Casey Kubara broke the deadlock midway through the final stanza, latching onto a cross-ice pass from Geordie Wudrick to Kubara streaming down the wing, before he cut back in on Anthony Kimlin and calmly slotted home to give the Brave the lead and completing his hat-trick in the process. The game was marred by a nasty altercation between Sydney Bears goalie, Anthony Kimlin, and CBR Brave Centre Harry Byers with just over 5 minutes left in the game. Both were given match penalties, and Bears captain Michael Schlamp was also given his marching orders for his involvement in the scuffle. Bears Assistant Coach Steve Austin noted that the Bears may be missing a couple of key players for the next week or so. “I think there might be a few players that we’re not going to have next week because of the altercation that happened,” Austin said. “So were going to have to regroup and try to fill those spots, but we’ll do alright.” After the dust settled the CBR found themselves on a five-minute power play, which the Bears fought hard to kill off. Geordie Wudrick proved too much to handle however, gathering his own rebound from Bears backup goalie Gabriel Robledo to score a dirty between the legs top shelf goal to seal the victory for the home side. Steve Austin pointed the physicality of the CBR Brave and the challenge of playing at a smaller venue. “I thought the boys played really well,” Austin said. “It’s always hard playing here in Canberra they’re a tough team and it’s a small rink so it makes the game very challenging. Everything happens really quick.” “You feel for the guys because they do give 100% all the time. Sometimes the game loses it flow but we’ve just got to go back and regroup.” Austin praised the Bears second line for standing up throughout the game. “Cameron Todd and that second line of ours with Cliff and Richard [Tesarik], I thought they were the best line tonight,” Austin said. “Let’s hope they can carry it on next week because they’re going to have to fill some spots that we’re not going to have next week.” CBR Brave coach, Josh Unice, was pleased with the effort of his team. “We’re most successful when skating hard, we’re playing physical and we’re making smart decisions with the puck,” Unice said. “When you have this skill and the offensive depth that we do have, when you’re getting pucks to the net and bodies to the net, plays are made.” Unice also pointed out the combination of Wudrick and Casey Kubara. “Casey is making a huge name for himself and Geordie is living up to all the hype,” Unice said. “He’s still trying to gel and with the injuries we’ve had, his lines keep changing all the time but he’s a very gifted hockey player.” The CBR Brave take to the road next week to face league leaders the Melbourne Ice in a gruelling double header at the O’Brien Group Arena. The Sydney Bears are on the road again next week, taking on the Adelaide Adrenaline at the IceArena in Adelaide. |
