The Melbourne Ice shut out the Melbourne Mustangs 3-0 in a suspenseful game at the O’Brien Group Arena on Saturday night. The game was a sell out before the doors opened in the hotly anticipated clash between the Melbourne rivals. It took only 23 seconds for former Mustangs and returning Ice forward Joey Hughes to open the scoring, sending a surge of cheers through the crowd. With the early goal, Melbourne Ice Coach Brent Laver thought the goal had a strange effect on the game. “It's ridiculous, cause it’s awesome to score so early, but it almost felt like a bit of a buzzkill” Laver said. “It almost dragged the energy out of the game a little bit.” What followed was three periods of intense defence from both sides. In an intense struggle, it took until six minutes from full time for any other players to trouble the scorers, with Tommy Powell setting up Matt Armstrong, before Powell claimed his own just 22 seconds later. The match was new Ice goalie Troy Davenport's first in the AIHL with the import shot-stopper turning away all 23 Mustangs shots for the shutout. Although the Mustangs held their own throughout the match and battled hard for the puck for the entire game, the Ice won select moments and it was enough to win the game. “There's probably a small period there where we got distracted and we let other things get the better of us, lost our focus on the puck and it hurt us in the scoreboard,” Mustangs Coach Michael Flaherty said. “But I saw a lot of things that I liked. “I was really happy with our defence guys. They added that thing that we're looking for, so I think they're only going to get better and better as they get into the games and into the feel of it.” Laver was impressed with his side and how they stepped up towards the end of the third period. “It's the boys themselves,” Laver said. “We do a lot of work during the week, but come game day, they really take control and stand up and know how to do what they need to do.” This game marked the Ice’s Matt Armstrong’s 150th in the league, as well as the Mustangs’ Brendan McDowell’s 100th for the Mustangs. Next week, the Mustangs take on CBR Brave in a double header at the O’Brien Group Arena, while the Ice will take on the Sydney Ice Dogs at the Liverpool Catholic Club Ice Rink, before travelling to Newcastle to take on the North Stars in the first Grand Final rematch of the season. |
