Australia have won 2016 Division 2 Group B World Championships Gold, downing New Zealand 6-2 in the teams’ final match in Mexico. The 6-2 win was enough for Australia to clinch the Gold medal for the tournament, with Mexico an unassailable four points behind coming into their last match later in the program. Undefeated throughout the tournament, Australia scored a whopping 58 goals, conceding only 10. From the opening puck drop, it was clear this was going to be a contest. Australia have dominated all but Mexico in this tournament but with national pride and Trans Tasman bragging rights on offer, the previous results meant next to nothing. It was a physical contest from the outset with plenty of checking and clearly no love lost between the teams. New Zealand pressed hard for a goal in the opening exchanges, forechecking hard and keeping Australia in their own zone effectively. As Australia began to gain the zone, the strong passing began to trouble the Ice Blacks and Jordan Kyros opened the scoring seven minutes in, latching onto a close range one-time from a nice feed from Wehebe Darge. A fascinating contest was developing however, with the tournament’s two leading goaltenders, Australia’s Anthony Kimlin (0.906%) and New Zealand’s Richard Parry (0.903%) - proving why they have been so effective all tournament. In the shadow of the first period break, a nice passing play on the power play was finished nicely when Cameron Todd found the unmarked David Huxley across ice, firing the goal from a tight angle. At the first break, Australia lead 2-0 in a high quality match with New Zealand pressing Australia well in defence and Australia controlling the puck well in offence. New Zealand were not going to back down, putting pressure on Australia immediately in the second and almost eking out a goal from the opening face-off. Australia were the next to score though Cameron Todd taking a shot as Australia entered the zone as Wehebe Darge cleaned up the scraps, giving Darge his 10th goal of the tournament and Australia a strong 3-0 lead. Mitch Humphries continued his strong tournament being a nuisance in the New Zealand crease, scoring the next two in quick succession, both off Richard Tesarik. First, Humphries cleaned up a rebound from a slapshot from the blue line, before taking a pass from behind the net and waiting for his moment to give Australia a 5-0 lead. With only 17 seconds left in the period, Darge then made it 6-0, again showing those smooth skating skills to slide straight through the New Zealand defence, deking Parry to score the goal. At 6-0, the third period was largely academic. However, New Zealand pushed hard, scoring two well-earned goals through a blue line slap shot to Mitchell Frear and a well-place wrist-shot from Jacob Ratcliffe. Wehebe Darge was named Forward of the Tournament for scoring an incredible 11 goals and 13 assists for 24 points in just five games, while Anthony Kimlin’s 22 saves from 24 shots saw him named Player of the Game against New Zealand. The result sees Australia promoted to Division 2 Group A in 2017, where they will face the likes of Spain, Belgium, Serbia and Iceland, with the sixth team to be decided by the last-place team in the Division 1 Group B World Championships to be held April 17-23. |
