Perth Thunder rookies Alastair Punler and Tomek Sak have a combined AIHL tally of 24 games, but the pair will form a key part of the Thunder roster in the run towards the 2015 AIHL Finals. Punler and Sak both scored their first AIHL goals on the weekend against the Sydney Ice Dogs, adding to a growing list of Thunder rookies who are having an impact in their debut season. “I didn’t know I’d scored to be honest, I just tried to get a good piece of it then I was looking around and it was in the net,” Sak said of his first goal, which was his third point in the AIHL. Punler has found himself in and out of the Thunder team this season, with the Thunder rich on local defencemen, but relished the opportunity to take on the Ice Dogs. “I got to play a little more ice time in the Ice Dogs game, which was a good experience,” Punler said. “It was pretty fun, and it was good to get a goal on the board.” The Thunder have produced a large crop of local talent, with Sak and Punler joining Kieran Webster as goal scorers in the AIHL this season, while Jamie Campbell, Lyndon Lodge and Kaden Goulds have each made their AIHL debuts this season. The Thunder face the Melbourne Mustangs at Perth Ice Arena this weekend, a clash which Punler says will be challenging as Perth push for top spot in the AIHL standings. “They’ve been inconsistent, but they’re playing really well at the moment so it will be a good test for the boys,” Punler said. Sak said he was excited at the prospect of heading in to the AIHL Finals in his first season. “It’s pretty exciting, you definitely have to up the ante in those games,” Sak said. “It’s going to be big; it will be a lot harder than it has been so far.” |
