Canada beat USA in game one of the Ice Hockey Classic |

A good crowd has turned out to witness the first Ice Hockey Classic game on a frozen Rod Laver Arena in Melbourne on Friday night with Canada defeating the USA 9-6 in game one. The crowd were treated to all the spectacles an all-star style game generally offers with 15 goals, slick stick handling, big hits, big saves, star-studded fights and toothless grins as wide as the neighbouring MCG. The atmosphere inside the famous tennis stadium closer resembled a party than a sporting event and both fans and players seemed to be enjoying every moment. No one seemed to be having more fun than San Jose Shark, 2014/15 NHL All-Star and defenceman for the Canadian team Brent Burns, who quickly became a fan favourite. He admitted that coming to Melbourne had been a long time coming. “It’s always been on my bucket list, coming to Melbourne, and I’m stoked I got to cross it off playing hockey for a great cause,” Burns said. On the ice, it was business as usual for the players as the big hits and goals came thick and fast. The USA opened the scoring through 2009 Canadiens Draftee center Mike Cichy just over a minute into the opening period, but it was all Canada after that. They piled on four unanswered goals, including two through Tyler Gron and singles to Matt Frattin and Bryan Cameron, to take a comfortable 4-1 lead into the change rooms. But the Americans came out hard in the second period and were pushing their cross-border rivals every step of the way. After a beautiful shot fake and goal by Michael Forney and captain Zenon Konopka dropped the gloves to pump up his team, it seemed the Americans might be seizing control of the game. Despite a steadying goal by Canadian defenceman Mathieu Brisebois with just over five minutes remaining, the Americans continued to push and when Mike Cichy took a long stretch pass and forced the puck through the equipment of Canadian Goalie Tyler Bunz to score his second. Canada seemed desperate to put the game to bed as early in the third period as possible and after a turn over by Konopka resulted in a goal by Ryan Watson and a short handed goal by Mathieu Brisebois it looked like the had succeeded. But the USA refused to lay down, pouring in three late goals to bring the deficit back to just one with three minutes remaining. Despite the best efforts of the USA, the Canadians managed to ice the game with two empty net goals and win by a comfortable three goals. USA coach Keith Primeau said that despite the loss, everyone wins. “Both teams played hard and had a whole heap of fun,” Primeau said. “These kinds of games are so great to coach because these games are for a great cause so everyone comes out on top.” The teams went at it again on Saturday night in Game 2 of the 2015 Ice Hockey Classic in Sydney. There are games left in Brisbane (June 13) and Perth (June 20). |
