Adrenaline edge Bears in tight affair |

Adelaide Adrenaline have picked up a second win is as many weeks against the Sydney Bears, edging the Sydneysiders 3-1 in a compelling game of hockey at the Penrith Ice Palace. The score line reflected the incredibly strong defensive performances from both sides with a late empty netter giving the visitors breathing space. From the opening puck drop the game was tight, with both teams laying in some big hits and restricting chances on net. That was until Tyler Grove managed to open up space down the centre of the ice. The initial save from the Bears’ Czech import goalie Kamil Jarina falling at the feet of Adrenaline defenceman Sean Greer who stabbed the puck home for his first goal of the season. Jarina, in only his second Bears game, was called upon again and again to keep the score down as the Adelaide side peppered the net with shot after shot. However Jarina ensured his team went to break only one goal down and well in the hunt. A goalless second period followed, with chances going amiss and minimal calls making for some enjoyable end-to-end hockey without reward. The third was headed much the same way until Sean Greer and Josef Rezek combined, the latter splitting the Bears with a pass, almost the length of the ice that Darren Corstens slotted to the goalie’s right. With the crowd getting rather vocal, it wasn’t long before there was more physical play with neither side holding back from big hits as the game wore on. The tension boiled over midway through the period, especially when Spencer Austin was sent from the ice after a check to the head of Adrenaline’s Remy McGuiness. Adelaide failed to take advantage of the power play although the Bears’ Tomas Landa set up an exciting final ten minutes with a short handed goal. The Adrenaline felt like they struck back soon after only for the match officials to rule that the puck had been cleared off the line by a Bears’ defenceman. With a power play in the final minutes, the Bears sensed a chance of an equaliser, pulling the goalie and bombarding the away sides’ net. Unfortunately for the home side, Sean Greer was able to send the puck home from his own zone to seal the victory and his second goal of the game. Adrenaline coach Ryan O’Handley was happy with his side’s performance, though feels for the Bears. “It was a close game,” O’Handley said. “I don’t think the Bears record right now reflects their play – they’ve got a pretty good team.’ Bears captain Michael Schlamp echoed the same sentiments feeling his side didn’t make many mistakes. “We defended effectively and didn’t give them many chances,” Schlamp said. “We’ve just got to tidy up those mistakes and the bounce has to go our way.” Sydney Bears coach Vlad Rubes said his side had “got a bit more gritty” and was “definitely showing a bit more emotion”. Asked how he felt about the game, Vlad felt the Bears were “a bit unlucky”.” “Losing games by one or two [goals] is frustrating, but it’s just that learning curve the team need to go through,” Rubes said. The Bears and Adrenaline are set to meet again in a double header in Adelaide next weekend, which will complete the season series between the teams in the first three weeks of the season. |
