The defending premiers the Melbourne Mustangs made an unforgettable start to the 2015 season with a 13-0 win over the Sydney Ice Dogs at the Medibank Icehouse on Sunday afternoon.
Coming off the back of a 9-1 victory over the Melbourne Ice in their pre-season exhibition match, the Mustangs roared their way into the 2015 season in emphatic style.
Having unveiled banners commemorating both the H Newman Reid Trophy for winning the minor premiership and Goodall Cup Championship, the Mustangs were in celebration mode.
From the moment the Mustangs hit the ice, they were ruthless as the young Ice Dogs struggled to keep the puck away from their competition.
The Mustangs’ Brendan McDowell impressed with a hat-trick, scoring the first goal of the game in the first 90 seconds. He scored again during the second period, claiming the Mustangs fourth goal and completed his hat-trick in the third period with the eighth goal.
However, it was a true team performance from the Mustangs, with 15 of the 16 players scoring points with eight different goalscorers.
They were led by six points (two goals, four assists) for Jamie Bourke and five points (one goal, four assists) for Viktor Gibbs Sjödin.
Three goals in each of the first two periods set the Mustangs up for a final onslaught, scoring seven goals in the final period from 24 shots.
Mustangs coach Brad Vigon was pleased with the performance from his team.
“From the outset of the game we were very switched on,” Vigon said. “Our systems were working and they were doing all the right things.”
However, the Mustangs played on the large score difference and lost discipline, choosing instead to make excessive passes over goal shots.
Despite this, the Mustangs continued to outmanoeuvre the Ice Dogs, taking advantage of their passes to open space in enemy territory.
Ice Dogs coach Anders Jespersen acknowledged that his young team has a long way to go to be competitive in the AIHL.
“Today was terrible,” Jespersen admits. “This is a new team, this is a young team.”
Vigon empathises with the Ice Dogs’ situation.
“They’re a very young team, they’re learning,” he said.
The Mustangs hit the ice again on Thursday night, facing off against rivals the Melbourne Ice in a Grand Final rematch, while the Sydney Ice Dogs head home to try their luck against Perth Thunder next Sunday. |
