Three goals in 30 seconds have led the Newcastle North Star to a 6-4 win over the Adelaide Adrenaline at Hunter Ice Skating Stadium on Saturday night. It was a packed house in attendance for the first game of the season as the North Stars honoured returned servicemen on the 100th anniversary of ANZAC Day. When play got underway, it took only 19 seconds of the first period for new import Geordie Wudrick to put the North Stars ahead 1-0. Wudrick was able to take advantage of a beautiful pass from Beau Taylor taking advantage of the new hybrid-icing rule and catching the Adrenaline off guard. The North Stars dominated the attack in the first period, outshooting the Adrenaline 12-3. However, as the game was fast paced and both teams were fighting hard anything could happen. With just under three minutes left in the first period, the Adrenaline’s Tyler Grove put on a great move to level the scores at 1-1 at the end of the first period. The Adrenaline put early pressure on in the second but it was the North Stars that took advantage in the period. Midway through the period, new North Stars import Jan Safar added the home sides’ second from a rebound. This opened the floodgates with Luke Moffatt, Shane Southwood and Robert Starke all piling on goals to take the score from 2-1 to 5-1 in 30 seconds. Stunned, the Adrenaline knew they had to fight back, stepping up the intensity and immediately going on the attack. When the North Stars took a penalty, the Adrenaline struck with Grove claiming his second to give his team some hope. Although Luke Moffatt re-established the North Stars four-goal lead, quick goals to Greg Oddy and Zach Boyle meant the Adrenaline had a sniff at 6-4 with six minutes left. Despite ending up on the wrong side of the result, Adelaide’s interim coach Neil Boyle was happy with the performance of their players. “With four guys back from the World Championships and five new guys on our lines, we are actually really happy especially to see them battle through the third period and fight back,” Boyle said. He continued saying that when the entire team is available, the team will improve as it will give them the opportunity “to work on systems, and our line combinations in practice”. Although happy to have the points on the board, North Stars coach Andrew Petrie said his team could improve in the third period. “Something about the third period is killing us,” Petrie said. “I think it is a level of complacency when we’re comfortably ahead [on the scoreboard], but I will breed it out of them one way or another”. Petrie said that there were several positives out of the game, including the control of possession and the ability to finish their goals. “The best thing about tonight was how we controlled the pace and the tempo, as a result we now have a couple of points in the bank and we can build on it from here,” Petrie said. Both teams are back in action on Sunday, with the North Stars at home to the CBR Brave and the Adrenaline continuing the weekend road trip against the Bears in Penrith. |
