The Sydney Ice Dogs claimed their first win of the Wilson Cup defeating the Newcastle North Stars 2-1 in a shootout at Hunter Ice Skating Stadium.
With the North Stars entering the match having sealed their place in the Wilson Cup final out on the back of a win on Saturday night against the Sydney Bears, the crowd was pumped for an exciting match between the North Stars and Ice Dogs.
With fast feet, hard hits and solid scoring opportunities from both teams, the Ice Dogs Matt Grogan in his debut for the club and North Stars Dayne Davis had their work cut out throughout the first period.
With possession even for both teams, the period came to a scoreless finish, with a great goalie battle taking place.
With the second period keeping up to the pace of the first, Newcastle’s home-grown Hayden Sheard got the first points on the board for the North Stars, tidying up a rebound in front of the net. It was Sheard’s sixth goal of the tournament.
The North Stars had a number of opportunities throughout the period to add to the score, but were unable to score on an impressive performance by Grogan, turning away 11 shots.
Regardless, the North Stars went into the break leading 1-0.
The Ice Dogs entered the third period with more bite, dominating the attack in the early exchanges without breaking Davis’ defence.
With the North Stars struggling to get the puck out of their defensive half, tempers were flaring, adding to the tension of a one-goal game.
Three Ice Dogs penalties, gave the Novocastrians the perfect opportunity to add to their lead to no avail.
With four minutes remaining in the final period, the Ice Dogs’ Daniel Pataky sent a booming slapshot from the blue line inside the left post to tie the score.
Despite renewed desperation from both sides, the game ended 1-all and headed to shootout.
A Scott Clemie goal in the first round of the shootout was enough for the Ice Dogs to claim the win.
Grogan stood strong for the Ice Dogs to complete a great debut for the team, turning away 35 of 36 shots during the game, as well as the three shootout attempts.
General Manager Garry Doré reflected on the result, saying it was a good chance to give some of the younger players some ice time.
“We were missing a couple of our senior players, but it was a great opportunity for our young fellas, and they did what we asked of them and they played hard,” Doré said
“We need to focus on capitalising on our opportunities. It seemed when the puck would land on their stick they weren’t quick enough to release. It is a game of opportunities and we need to look a step ahead.”
The North Stars are back in action next Saturday against the Sydney Bears for the Wilson Cup Grand Final. The Ice Dogs will be back in action in week one of the 2015 AIHL season when they travel to Melbourne to take on the Ice and Mustangs. |
