Thunder hoping to storm into contention |

Following a tough double loss weekend against the CBR Brave last week, the Perth Thunder’s playoff hopes are hanging on life support. Now 12 points out of the top four, there seems to only be a mathematical chance for the Western Australians to return to the AIHL Finals. The Thunder are set for a busy run into the end of the season with four straight double headers, kicking off this week at home with ladder-leading Melbourne Mustangs before taking on the North Stars and Ice Dogs away, Ice Dogs in a double at home and the Ice in Melbourne to finish out the season. Despite leaving the ice against the Brave last week with none of the points needed to inject life into their 2014 campaign, coach Stan Scott still believes the team has the ability to bounce back and grasp a slot in the finals for the second year running. Although the Thunder picked up three points against the Mustangs in Melbourne in the teams’ first pair of meetings with a 4-1 win, that result will mean very little at this time of the year. “The run to the playoffs is always hard no matter where you sit on the ladder” Thunder forward and alternate captain Andrew Cox said. “We know the Mustangs are going to be pushing hard to get their first playoff berth and from where we sit on the ladder at the moment, we know nothing less than a six point weekend will keep us in the running.” The Mustangs are a fast and physical team, whose speed up front in the form of import Pat O’Kane, Jamie Bourke and Joey Hughes and big bodies with the likes of the Swedish import Viktor Gibbs Sjödin and Jack Wolgemuth will prove to be troublesome to the Thunders defensive pairings. However, the Mustangs defence has also been working hard, only five times allowing more than three goals this season. If the Thunder can focus on being disciplined, and countering the speed of the Mustangs forwards in the neutral zone, then they will do what they can to try and keep their finals hopes alive. Emerging from a shaky start to the season and a line-up that has been shaken by injuries throughout, the Thunder coaches and players, alike, believe the squad has the depth, and the talent to prove they are still contenders in this competition. “To say this weekend is vital to both teams this season would be an understatement,” Cox said. “We expect two extremely tough games.” The Perth Thunder will take on the Melbourne Mustangs with the puck dropping at 4:30pm AWST on both days at Perth Ice Arena. |
