Thunder leave North Stars dazzled |

The Perth Thunder stunned the Newcastle North Stars, shutting out the Novocastrians 5-0 in Newcastle on Saturday night. Although the North Stars had been finding form with three straight wins, moving into the top four, the Thunder showed their resurgent form, claiming their fourth straight victory. After two decisive wins over Adelaide Adrenaline at their double header two weekends ago, Perth Thunder were coming off a bye and looking to follow the North Stars up the league standings. However, Thunder coach Stan Scott said it wasn’t the best time for the rest. “Having just come off a three-game winning streak, this week’s break certainly came at a bad time for us, but it was time to focus on the task at hand,” Scott said. “We were glad to win the game tonight and the whole team played so well.” The Thunder opened the scoring on 68 seconds in through alternate captain Andrew Cox. Despite the strike, the North Stars dominated the ice, keeping the visitors on defence throughout the period with the shots on goal for the period finishing a 12-4 to the home team. The North Stars coach Garry Doré said that he thought his side played exceptionally but couldn’t find a hole in the defence. “We just couldn’t put it past them,” Doré said. “You let your guard down after you have so much pressure and they can capitalise and just score a few.” The second period was much the same as the first with the North Stars outshooting the Thunder 10-6. However, the result was the same with Corey Toy adding the Thunders’ second. Doré said that his side attacked strongly but just couldn’t crack Perth import goalie Mathieu Dugas, who ultimately saved 39 shots on goal. “It wasn’t a five-nil game,” Doré said. “We outshone them two-to-one and had great opportunities. We just couldn’t put it past [Dugas]; he had a magnificent game. He was just absolutely in the rhythm.” The North Stars struggled to catch up after two periods that they dominated and the Thunder ran away with the game. Cox and Toy both put their second past North Stars goaltender Harrison May, while Justin Fox added the final goal in the last minute-and-a-half of the game to seal a memorable 5-0 victory. Scott said that his whole team came together to provide the first win at the Hunter Ice Skating Stadium. “It’s the first time we’ve won here at Newcastle, and Dugas did his job, but everyone did their job,” Scott said. “The defence and the forwards came together and we managed to play perfectly and score five goals.” “We play the North Stars again two times in our next three games. Both of us are coming off winning streaks and fighting for finals positions after bad starts to the season so I expect hard fought battles.” Following this game the North Stars played the Sydney Ice Dogs in a catch-up game against the Sydney Ice Dogs on Sunday night at the Hunter Ice Skating Stadium. Next week, the North Stars take on the Adelaide Adrenaline at HISS on Saturday night. The Thunder took on the Sydney Bears before have another bye weekend. |
