North Stars tame Mustangs in wild encounter |

The Newcastle North Stars thrilled a bumper home crowd with a 5-2 victory over the Melbourne Mustangs at the Hunter Ice Skating Stadium on Saturday.
“The Mustangs are a great team this year,” said Doré. “They’ve got a lot more strengths than weaknesses and we knew we’d have to play hard against these guys. We stuck to our game plan and the systems we have in place and came away with the win.”
Doré praised the work of May, who saved 37 shots on their way to victory, but was pleased with the entire team’s performance.
“Harri had a great game,” said Doré. “Rob Starke and John Kennedy also really stood up and protected the front of the net. Having Brian Bales playing with Chris Wilson and Cody Danberg is a really classy looking line-up.”
The match opened with free-flowing, end-to-end play, resulting in both teams having multiple chances on goal.
It was the North Stars that grabbed the advantage in the dying stages of the first period through Canadian import, Chris Wilson.
The second period continued in the same fashion and goals to Joseph Hughes and Jamie Bourke gave the Mustangs a 2-1 lead.
The advantage only lasted a few minutes and the scores were levelled by veteran North Star, Rob Starke, with his 55th AIHL goal.
Newcastle added two more goals by Cody Danberg and Adam Geric in a chaotic final period dominated by penalties, power plays and a scuffle in the North Stars net within the last two minutes of the match.
In a frenetic ending, the North Stars’ Adam Geric and Mustangs’ Damian Bright were sent to the penalty box for holding. A minute later they were joined by Newcastle’s Cody Danberg after being penalised for roughing.
Only seconds later a scuffle broke out on the ground in Newcastle’s net which saw defenceman Rob Starke sent to the box, along with Mustangs Joseph Hughes and Viktor Gibbs Sjödin, all of whom were given roughing penalties.
With the penalty box full, the Mustangs sacrificed keeper, Fraser Carson, giving them a five on two advantage with the better part of a minute remaining.
However Newcastle would not be denied and sealed the victory with a second goal from Chris Wilson.
The breakaway goal was met with jubilation from the crowd and capped off a great evening for the North Stars.
Mustangs coach, Brad Vigon, was disappointed with their inconsistent form following their 8-3 demolition of the Melbourne Ice on Thursday night.
“We’ve had a theme of inconsistency all year. We play good one game and the next we can’t buy a goal,” said Vigon. “We really just need to find a way to score more goals.”
Vigon suggested that the North Stars composure in front of goal was major factor in their victory.
“I just think that we’re overpassing and looking for perfect goals,” Vigon said. “They scored a couple of goals on rebounds and those are the type of goals we need to start scoring.”
The victory means the North Stars move up to fifth on the AIHL ladder ahead of the Sydney Ice Dogs.
But, the North Stars coach isn’t getting ahead of himself, insisting there is still a long way to go in the season.
“There are a lot of teams with games in hand and we just want to focus on winning,” Doré said. “We’ve got the Melbourne Ice here next Saturday night and if we sit back and let them play their game we’re going to be in trouble. We need to take it to them.”
The Mustangs defeated the Sydney Bears 5:3 on Sunday at the Sydney Ice Arena but have a bye week next week before travelling to Adelaide for a double header. |
