Import trio lead Brave over Ice |

The CBR Brave toppled first-placed Melbourne Ice 4-2 in Canberra on Sunday night. After trailing 2-1 in the third period, the Brave rallied and scored three unanswered goals to close out the game. It was a consummate performance from Mathieu Ouellette and Anton Kokkonen, both who scored four points, and Stephen Blunden, who scored three, as the trio continue to develop their partnership. The Ice remains on top of the table with the Brave moving into third position, despite having played the least number of games. The win broke an eight-year losing streak against the Ice, with the Canberra Knights conceding 44 goals over four games last season. Brave president Peter Chamberlain was pleased by his team’s win. “We took them to a shootout last night, and if we had a couple of pucks drop for us would have had the win,” Chamberlain said. “We came out tonight and beat them 4-2. It was a brilliant effort by all the players and the organisation.” Brave import Mathieu Ouellette opened the scoring four minutes into the game, but the Ice quickly took control after that. In control for much of the first period, and consolidated the pressure through an Austin McKenzie goal only a minute before the end of the period. The second was similar to the first with the Ice putting on plenty of pressure. Spending plenty of time on defence, the Brave were struggling to clear the puck throughout the second and it was feared that the Brave were tiring after the draining shootout loss on Saturday night. After holding the Ice out in the second, it took just over three minutes for Todd Graham to find the back of the net. Graham was in his first week back in the AIHL from where he studies at the Buffalo State College and plays for the school in the NCAA III. Graham said at times his team had been guilty of complacency in the past few games. “It’s tough playing two games in a row, especially against Canberra,” Graham said. “They’re a hard working team. We struggled to get going, and once we did we took a penalty and broke the momentum.” Following Graham’s goal, the momentum shifted to the Brave who piled on three unanswered goals through Ouellette, Anton Kokkonen and Stephen Blunden. Matthew Harvey was the only other point scorer with an assist, the only point for the Brave that wasn’t from the three star attackers. Blunden said it was pleasing to come out with that kind of a performance against a team like the Ice. “They’re the top team in the league right now and we were able to beat them, and hopefully catch up to them soon,” Blunden said. “I think we need to improve our defensive game. We rely on Petri [Pitkanen] a lot to make a lot of big saves for us and he usually steps up, but it would be nice to give him a break.” Both teams have one game next week with the third Melbourne derby for the Ice on Thursday night and the Brave at home to the Sydney Bears on Saturday night. |
