The Adelaide Adrenaline survived a late scare to defeat the Sydney Ice Dogs 7-5 at the Adelaide Ice Arena on Saturday night. In a highly entertaining match, the Ice Dogs rallied from 6-3 down to pull within one goal with only two minutes to play. However, the Sydneysiders were unable to send the game to a shootout after pulling goalie Tim Noting, allowing the Adrenaline to slot and empty netter. Adelaide Adrenaline head coach Ryan O’ Handley felt the movement of the puck through the neutral zone and the power play was outstanding from his side, but was frustrated by the finish. “We played selfish hockey towards the end, but we got away with the three points,” O’ Handley said. O’ Handley was happy with the majority of the game, although the team were unable to put the Sydney Ice Dogs away, especially after leading 6-3 midway through the third. “Joseph Rezek had a good game, he was really solid,” O’Handley said. “David Chubb and [Brett] Liscomb had good games as well. [Alternate captain Josh] Harding on the backhand was outstanding again tonight. Lots of guys performed well tonight.” The Adelaide Adrenaline jumped out of the gate aggressively with two goals within the first four minutes. Rezek opened the scoring with a booming slap shot that whizzed past Noting’s right blocker. Harding added his first of two goals of the game, tipping in a goal that was passed across the crease for a 2-0 lead. In an exciting opening to the match, David Dunwoodie pulled one back for the Ice Dogs, jamming a goal through Peter King’s five-hole. However the Adrenaline claimed another goal through Chubb, ensuring that the home team would hold a strong lead at the break. Adelaide Adrenaline alternate captain, David Huxley, was happy with the start, but felt that after scoring they needed to consolidate before looking for more goals. “It was a good start, but sometimes we scored and let them out,” Huxley said. “Once we score, we have to consolidate that first goal before we start thinking about the next one. They scored straight after us a couple of times tonight.” Despite coming back strongly, Ice Dogs coach Andrew Petrie was unhappy with the way his team started the game. “We didn’t start,” Petrie said. “I think it’s as simple as that. For whatever reason, we weren’t emotionally ready at the drop of the puck. I think that was reflected in the tempo. It was slow. It lacked a bit of purpose, and they jumped on us.” The second period saw both sides exchanging goals before the end of and when Wehebe Darge scored his second of the game, the Adrenaline were up by three. However, the Ice Dogs weren’t quite finished, scoring two quick goals through Dunwoodie and Robert Malloy to force a frantic final two minutes. The Ice Dogs pulled Noting for the extra attacker, but were unable to stop Rezek slotting the empty netter with one second remaining. Adelaide assistant captain David Harding said the Adrenaline played well despite the scare towards the end of the game. “Everybody played together,” Harding said. “Nobody was off on their own tangent. Obviously we let it slip a little bit and that’s why they got it back to where they were.” The teams returned to the Adelaide Ice Arena on Sunday afternoon with the reversed result. Ice Dogs goalkeeper Noting claimed his first shutout of the season in a starring role after the Ice Dogs scored two early first period goals to close out the match 2-0. After a busy start to the season, the Ice Dogs have a bye next week and will take on the CBR Brave at Liverpool on Sunday week. The Adrenaline will travel to Perth to take on the Thunder in a double header. |
