The ladder-leading Melbourne Ice edged the CBR Brave 2-1 in a shootout at the Phillip Ice Skating Centre on Saturday night. Entering the game, the Ice had won the five away games the team has had this season prior to this game and were keen to keep that record intact. Ice coach Brent Laver said he was happy with his team’s performance, but was worried by the Brave, especially after being taken to the shootout. “I thought we went really well,” Laver said. “It’s an incredibly hard place to play when they’re playing the way they are.” Ice import, Jason Baclig, echoed his coach’s feelings. “I thought we played well the whole game,” Baclig said. “Every team is coming in having to play a whole game to win because they just keep coming. We knew we were going to be tested.” The Ice started the game the stronger of the two teams, eager to assert their dominance from the outset. Although it took until the last minute of the first period, it was the Ice’s Matt Armstrong who was able to unlock the Brave’s defence, claiming the game’s opening goal. Rather than being discouraged, the Brave fought their way back into the match throughout an even second period. Both goalkeepers were in top form with the Ice’s Jaden Pine-Murphy saving 28 from 29 shots and the Brave’s Petri Pitkanen turning away 32 of the 33 shots he faced with both goalkeepers moving to first and second on the goalkeeping leaders list. It took until just over 10 minutes from time for Anton Kokkonen to open the Brave’s account. With the goal coming off assists from Stephen Blunden and Mathieu Ouellette, the three imports are forming a formidable and dangerous combination. Despite desperation from both sides to decide the game in regulation, the evenly teams could not be split after 50 minutes of action. With the Brave coming in to the game on the back of a four-game winning streak, the vocal home crowd were willing their side on to what would have been a memorable victory. Both the Ice’s Lliam Webster and Brave’s Anton Kokkonen unable to convert their attempts, although Matt Armstrong and Stephen Blunden ensured it would remain locked up after two rounds, both slotting their goals. The Ice’s Tim Johansson stepped up to put the Melbournians up 2-1 in the shootout, leaving the final attempt for Mathieu Ouellette to force sudden death rounds. However, the Brave’s Canadian import was unable to beat the New Zealand national team goalkeeper in Pine-Murphy, giving the Ice the two points. Brave coach Matti Luoma said that although the Brave lost, he was pleased with his team’s effort against the ladder-leaders. “Overall we need to be sharper and win the one-on-one battles all over the ice is the key,” Luoma said. The two teams returned to the ice on Sunday night. |
