The Breakdown: Week 4 |

|
For the first time in AIHL 2014 the home teams took control to grind out wins in four of the five matches. The coup of home ice victories brings the ledger a little closer with away teams now having won eight of the 15 matches this season. One shutout was registered this round, the least in a weekend all season excluding the Mustangs v Ice match which formed the entirety of the second weekend. There have now been six this weekend. Each match was closely fought over the weekend, just one of the matches being decided by more than two goals. This continues a trend of low scoring games in 2014, significantly down past seasons. ----- North Stars 1 @ Bears 3 The Bears second win over the North Stars this season was their first on home ice and ensures they remain one of just three teams undefeated in regular time. The Bears won consecutive games against the North Stars for the first time in 2,114 days (May 10, 2008 – Bears 4 @ North Stars 3 and July 19, 2008 - North Stars 4 @ Bears 6) Newcastle has scored the least goals of any team in 2014 (3 from 4 matches) From 2009-2013, Newcastle scored more goals in their opening game of each season than they have in their opening four games for 2014 2014 is the Bears most successful start to the season since 2008, where the Bears topped the regular season ladder ----- Ice Dogs 2 @ Mustangs 4 The Mustangs secured back-to-back victories over the Ice Dogs for the first time in franchise history and takes their total wins against the Ice Dogs to four from 12 games between the two teams This was a record equalling third consecutive home win for the Melbourne Mustangs This match was Jeff Grant’s first match in the AIHL and he scored a power play double Both Mustangs goalkeepers now have less than three goals per game (Fraser Carson 2.00 GAA in one match, Michael James 2.50 GAA in two matches) Following this match, the Ice Dogs still had three players in the top five point scorers in the AIHL (Simon Barg – 11, David Dunwoodie – 8 and Robert Malloy - 6) ----- Thunder 4 @ Adrenaline 3 (shootout) This was only the second time in five attempts that the Thunder had been victorious in the shootout This was the Thunder’s seventh consecutive win over the Adrenaline This has been the Adrenaline’s only loss in 2014, they remain just one of three teams undefeated in regular time Defenceman Josh Harding is averaging 1.3 PPG, the most of any Adrenaline player this season, buoyed by a goal and an assist in this match Continues Adelaide’s indifferent form in shootout, now at 1-1 for 2014, after finishing 2013 3-5, and now being 15-15 in shootouts since 2010 ----- Ice Dogs 2 @ Ice 5 The Ice Dogs lost four in a row for the first time since August 4th, 2012 This was the Ice Dogs fifth consecutive match on the road and they remain the only team in 2014 yet to play on home ice Austin McKenzie scored his first goal of the season, and claimed his first hat-trick for the Melbourne Ice in his playing 66th game (12 goals, 14 assists) The Ice scored more than three goals in a match for the first time in seven matches and outscored opponents 11-2 in their last three matches The Ice Dogs have scored more goals than any other team this season (18) but also conceded the most goals against (23) ----- Thunder 0 @ Adrenaline 1 The Perth Thunder have been shutout more times this season (3) than the rest of their AIHL history combined (2) Perth haven’t had a regular time win in their last five matches This was Adelaide’s first victory over the Thunder since May 19, 2012 This was the first home win in six matches for the Adelaide Adrenaline This was the lowest scoring match since the Adrenaline defeated the Mustangs 1-0 on August 18th, 2012 |
