In a weekend bookended by 3-0 shutouts for the Ice over the Perth Thunder, a double away win for the Adrenaline and the Brave’s inaugural victory, we look to the stats to see just how things have transpired in the final week of the opening month of the 2014 Australian Ice Hockey League season. April 2014 Away teams have outscored their hosts by 38-22 so far this season with home teams being shutout in half of the matches this season (five out of 10) The home team has only won three of 10 games this season, one in each week so far Five of the current top seven point scorers come from a Sydney team Ice Dogs 2 @ Brave 6 The Canberra Brave earned their first win in the AIHL beating the reigning champions, and now have a points differential of +2 following games against the North Stars and Ice Dogs This was the Ice Dogs lowest goal tally in 11 matches, dating back to a 5-1 to Adelaide last season The Brave have conceded the least goals of any team so far this season This was the most goals scored by a Canberra team against the Ice Dogs in 615 days (last game was a 9-7 loss for the Knights on August 19 2012) The last win by a Canberra side against the Ice Dogs was 629 days ago (5-3 at Liverpool on August 5) Adrenaline 4 @ North Stars 0 The North Stars were shutout in back-to-back matches for the first time in since at least 2003, if not their history Adelaide won their season opener for the first time since 2010 when they struggled to a 3-2 shootout victory over the Ice Dogs Adelaide shutout an opponent for the first time in ten matches and Adrenaline goalie Peter King’s first AIHL career shutout Adelaide have now taken competition points from each of their last 4 matches against the North Stars The first time that the North Stars have lost their opening two games since 2005 (lost to the Knights 4-3 and 3-2 in overtime to the Bears) Ice 3 @ Thunder 0 This was the lowest scoring match ever between these two teams (previously Ice 3 def. Thunder 1) The Melbourne Ice shutout a team when on the road for the first time in exactly six years (Ice 3 def. A’s 0, April 26th 2008) Matt Armstrong is the second most potent player in the league with 2 goals and 4 assists so far in 2014 and continues his AIHL career average of 2.0 points per game This was just the second time the Thunder had failed to score a goal on home ice The Thunder had previously been shutout only twice (against Ice Dogs and North Stars) Adrenaline 6 @ Bears 5 (shootout) Adelaide played in more shootouts than any other team last season (eight for a 3-5 record) The Bears haven’t beaten the Adrenaline at Sydney Ice Arena since July 29, 2012 This match saw the Bears score their most goals in a loss since an 8-5 loss to the North Stars on May 12, 2012 The Sydney Bears are one of just three teams who remain undefeated in regular time in 2014 Dane Ludolph scored the Bears’ first shorthanded goal since May 19 when Tomas Landa scored against the Thunder. It was also the fourth shorthanded goal of the season Ice 3 @ Thunder 0 The Thunder had previously been shutout only twice in three years, once against Ice Dogs (3-0 at Liverpool on May 18, 2013) and once against the North Stars (2-0 in Perth on July 21, 2012) The Ice became the first team to shutout the Thunder in consecutive matches The consecutive wins mean Melbourne Ice sit atop the AIHL ladder with 8 points The Perth Thunder are the only team yet to accumulate any competition points The Melbourne Ice have beaten the Perth Thunder in five of six clashes the teams have had in Perth |
