The CBR Brave recorded the franchise’s maiden AIHL win, beating the 2013 champions the Sydney Ice Dogs 6-2 at Phillip Ice Skating Centre on Saturday night. With the game in the balance after the first two periods and the score at 2-all, the Brave proved too strong as they ran away with four unanswered goals in the final period. Mathieu Ouellette, the Brave’s Canadian import, became the first goal scorer in franchise history when he snuck one past Ice Dogs goalie Tim Noting in the first period. Ouellette said the final period dominance was inspired by the fans who packed out the stadium. “I think we talked about it after the second period, before going out onto the ice for the third to win it for the fans,” Ouellette said. “They deserve so much for bringing the team back. It was all for them.” Ouellette recorded a double, claiming the go-ahead goal early in the third. Ouellette’s second was quickly followed by goals to Jordie Gavin and Kai Miettinen before 22-year old Chris McPhail completed the victory, scoring his second for the match. Brave captain Mark Rummukainen said it was fantastic to see so many Brave supporters in the crowd, and it really spurred the team on. “You come out and see that many people watching the game and cheering for you, it’s a very special feeling,” he said. Despite having plenty of strong opportunities in the earlier periods, Ice Dogs were unable to capitalise, held at bay by an outstanding performance from Finnish import Petri Pitkanen. He made 26 saves throughout the game, including a penalty shot attempt in the third period by John Clewlow. In a heated game, there were several moments where it threatened to boil over. The physicality of both sides was a highlight, in particular a hit from the Ice Dogs’ Tyler Kubara that knocked the Brave player off his feet and broke the Kubara’s stick in the process. Oullette said the match got a bit rough once the Brave started getting on top. “The Ice Dogs are like any other team, they don’t like losing and we really stuck it to them in the third, and they didn’t like that,” he said. “I think we made a mark for ourselves that even though they are defending champs, the Brave are for real this year and we’re not going to get pushed around.” Ice Dogs coach Dion Dunwoodie said that while it was a tough game for his team, there was still plenty of time for the team to rebuild their season. “We made a lot of mistakes [in the third period] and the wheels fell off,” he said. “We paid the price for it. The team that makes the least mistakes is going to come out the victors. We made a lot of mistakes and they capitalised on them.” “They’re a good club. Playing the club and the crowd, the crowd got to some of our players and made it a little bit hard and we paid the price.” The Sydney Ice Dogs continue their road trip, heading back to Melbourne next weekend to play the Mustangs on Saturday and Ice on Sunday. The Brave will have a week to celebrate and reflect on their victory before returning for a home-and-away weekend on May 10-11, playing the Adrenaline at home and the North Stars in their first away game. * Photos by Ben Southall |
