No Toy-ing about on the Thunder’s blue line |

2013 was a breakout season for the Perth Thunder. In only their second season in the AIHL, the newcomers held both the Adelaide Adrenaline and the Melbourne Mustangs at bay to make the AIHL playoffs. Led by Michael Forney, then ably served by Brian Berger and Dan Mohle, the Thunder trumpeted their arrival on the AIHL landscape. In 2014, they have been on the lookout for imports that could continue the work that’s been done over the past two seasons. Set to shoulder a fair share of these hopes will be 25-year old Virginian Corey Toy. The 6’1” defenseman is coming to Perth fresh off a career high point scoring season with the Fayetteville FireAntz in the SPHL, scoring 23 points (9 goals, 14 assists) in 39 games. Despite being an American, Toy’s path to hockey started out in a similar fashion to many Australian hockey players, beginning with inline hockey at the age of six. He made the switch to the ice at the age of 12 and never looked back. Toy played USHL from the age of 16 with the Omaha Lancers before four years of NCAA hockey with Ohio State University. Post-study, Toy played two games of ECHL before a full season in the CHL with the Arizona Sundogs. Finally, he made his way to the FireAntz. In two short years Toy has already been named alternate captain of the FireAntz. His list of career highlights includes winning silver at the Five Nations tournament with the U.S. Under-17 team, playing in the NCAA tournament and winning two national championships in inline hockey. He now hopes to add a championship with Perth. “My decision to come play hockey in Australia was set in motion a few years ago when I travelled to Sydney and first discovered there was a league here,” Toy explained. “I didn't know much about it, but knew that it was something I wanted to do before I retired from professional hockey. I have played with quite a few players that have come to this league such as Jeff Martens, John Kennedy, Nic Polaski and Michael Forney, as well as against Daniel Clarke, Joe Tolles, and Andy Howard.” Like many imports who travel to Australian shores, the chance to experience the Australian lifestyle was something that Toy couldn’t resist. “I’m most looking forward to experiencing a different culture while I'm here,” Toy said. “It will be great to see many different places while I am here, and I’m very excited to go to the beach during hockey season.” Like many hockey players, Toy is fond of his pre-game nap. However, teams should not take his laidback approach lightly. Toy takes pride in his defensive zone play and is not afraid to drop the gloves when it’s called for. With eight fights under his belt in the past two SPHL seasons alone, Toy is no push-over and will offer an extra dimension of grit and leadership to the Thunder blue line. |
