Melbourne v. Adelaide Double Header

The Melbourne Ice and Adelaide Adrenaline have split the points after an entertaining double header weekend at the Icehouse in Melbourne. Adelaide, with a testing schedule which sees them without a home game until June, came into the game off of the back of a strong win over the Sydney Bears. The Ice were still hurting from a shock shootout loss to the Sydney Ice Dogs at home the previous week and had a point to prove.

Game 1 on Saturday night saw a tight checking affair early but it was Brit Ouellette who got things going with a breakaway marker for the Adrenaline to draw first blood at 1-0. The Ice responded five minutes later through Chris Wong, who recorded his first for the season to level things at 1-1 with 8:30 remaining in the first period. With Luc Blain off for the Adrenaline for a check from behind, it was Ouellette again who raced in short-handed to give Adelaide a 2-1 lead going into the first intermission.

Wehebe Darge extended Adelaide’s lead to 3-1 three minutes into the 2^nd period and the pendulum looked to have well and truly swung in the visitor’s favour. The Ice were in penalty trouble through the 2^nd period until John Gordon pulled one back for the home team against the run of play, with a controversial that looked to have been kick in on replay. The visitors responded and, not to be outdone by his sibling, it was Travis Ouellette scored for the Adrenaline to make it 4-2. His goal was matched by a spectacular end to end rush by Gordon moments later who beat Parry to make it 4-3. Joey Hughes then added another for the Ice with 32 seconds remaining in the period to tie the game 4-4 and bring the sold out home crowd to their feet going into the final change.

However, the Ice failed to hold their discipline in the final period, taking five penalties which handed power play goals to Luc Blain and Josef Rezek, and ultimately the game to the Adrenaline with a 6-4 upset.

However, game 2 was a complete role reversal.

The Ice came out on all cylinders from the initial puck drop and did not let off the accelerator until the final siren. 3 quick goals in the first period to Baclig, Moore and Frank forced Adelaide into a time-out early, and then eventually a goalie change as the Ice added one more before the break for a 4-0 deficit. Josef Rezek pulled one back for Adelaide in the 2^nd for a 4-1 scoreline but was answered by Baclig moments later for his 2^nd of the game.

The Ice moved in for the kill in the 3^rd period and a flat footed Adelaide, who were two steps too quick for the Ice the night before, found themselves under attack the entire period in which the Ice piled on 5 more goals to run out eventual winners 9-3.

The Ice duly responded for two previously unconvincing performances the week prior as they get set to take on the Newcastle North Stars at home next week, whilst the Adrenaline have a week off to ponder what could’ve nearly been a 4 point weekend.
