Toulmin's Hat Trick in 6-2 defeat of Mustangs
Sunday, June 10, 2018 - Submitted by Juno Tsalis

The Sydney Ice Dogs took home an impressive 6-2 win against the Mustangs on Sunday night in an action-packed game that exceeded all expectations.

The Mustangs took the first lead of the night two and a half minutes into the opening period with a goal from Andrew Erzen. Less than a minute later, this was quickly followed up by Grant Toulmin who tied the game for the Ice Dogs.

Grant Toulmin scored his second of the night with 19 seconds remaining on the clock to give the Ice Dogs the lead at the end of the first.

There was no change on the scoreboard in the second until the final minutes of the period when Lee Turner put the puck past Petri Pitkänen to give the Ice Dogs a 3-1 lead. Another quick goal from Geordie Wudrick with 2:22 left on the clock gave the Ice Dogs a 4-1 lead heading into the third.

Melbourne were able to score in the opening minute of the final period, cutting their deficit. With some back and forth play and tempers beginning to flare, Dave Dunwoodie was sent to the box for cross checking at 14:30, sending the Ice Dogs to a penalty kill.

Grant Toulmin was given a breakaway opportunity on the kill and managed to score an unassisted goal - his hat trick - to give the Ice Dogs a 5-2 lead. Jonatan Ruth secured the win with a final goal just under 11 minutes into the period.

It was another rough roadtrip for the Melbourne Mustangs, dropping two games and taking no points home. Coach Parent-Langelier felt his team needs to fight harder for the puck in order to challenge the competitive 2018 field, and get back to form and mentality the team showed earlier in the season.

"We were expecting more intensity, said Parent-Langelier.

"More grit. More desire to go to the tough areas. We were doing it at the start of the year, and we're paying the price".

The Ice Dogs are in Melbourne next weekend to face the Mustangs on Saturday followed by the Ice on Sunday.

Back on home turf, the Mustangs will have a home derby on the 15 June, before meeting the Ice Dogs again at OBGA.
