Preview: Northstars take on Ice Dogs – and former players and coach |

|
After an eight-month break, things are starting to get real for the Sydney Ice Dogs as the club begins its 16th season with an opening home game against the Newcastle Northstars at Macquarie Ice Rink this 5pm Saturday 21 April.
The matchup will mark the first of four meetings between the NSW rivals as well as the first time they face each other with new coaches and teammates. The Ice Dogs side now includes former Northstars players Jonatan Ruth; Geordie Wudrick; Nic Mizen; and former Head Coach Andrew “Frij” Petrie. These two teams have been battling it out for the past 16 years with no love lost between them so fans can expect action right from the get –go.
New Ice Dogs recruit Jonatan Ruth talks about facing off against his former team and how the Dogs are shaping up in pre-season training.
By the Numbers
The last time the two teams met on 16th June 2017, the Ice Dogs took home the win, taking Newcastle down in a fast paced and physical game, by a score of 3-2.
Yet the Sydney side has won just 27 of the 65 games against the Northstars dating back to May 2002, including the Ice Dogs Goodall Cup championships in 2004 and 2013.
The Dogs won three of the four games they played against against the Northstars in 2017 and outscored the team 17 to 10.
With the introduction of new players and the pre-existing strength of the veteran Ice Dogs core, fans will have an exciting season ahead of them.
Not only are the players quick, but so are the actual games which begin at 5pm and finish up at 7pm - so everyone can kick on with their evening plans with an adrenaline rush and a smile on their faces.
