The Melbourne Ice took to their Sunday match against the CBR Brave a completely different team after their Saturday loss at the Phillip Swimming and Ice Skating Centre, and their refocused strategy paid off with a 6-3 victory and the 2017 AIHL Minor Premiership. League-leading Melbourne appeared to have put in place a damage mitigation strategy in place, as a more disciplined team without Viktor Gibbs Sjödin and Dayne Davis, prioritised a Sunday without injury or suspensions in their AIHL Finals race. Reflecting on the Sunday loss, CBR Brave Head Coach Rob Starke lamented a lacklustre final period, but was pleased with the way the Brave played. “I thought we played a very strong brand of hockey, but obviously the game got away from us in the third, but this weekend instilled a sense of confidence in us that we can skate with the best”. Eagle Tyler Kubara and his team mates have their sights set firmly on securing their Finals position. Photo: Paul Furness. Starke has turned his attention to the next challenge: cement a place in the 2017 AIHL Finals series. “Right now, looking at the way the standings are,” said Starke, “we need to win one more game, we need three more points to make the Finals, so we’re going to take it one game at a time, hopefully win in Newcastle and seal our finals position.” Prior to the puck drop, the CBR Brave announced a new community sponsor for Season 2018 with Menslink who support young Canberra men aged 13-25 through some of life's most trying times. The sponsorship was announced in conjunction with a substantial donation of over $13,000 thanks to the fundraising efforts during the Brave’s home games. In the early minutes of the game neither side asserted any dominance and an air of calm fell over the Brave Cave as both teams looked for weaknesses to exploit. The deadlock was finally broken by Joey Hughes who found himself unmarked down the wing, walked in on Aleksi Toivonen on the breakaway, and shelved a wicked wrist shot high over the glove to give the visitors a 1-0 lead with over seven minutes left. The Brave were quick to respond through Wehebe Darge, as he and Stephen Blunden capitalised on crisp passing in front of goaltender Jaden Pine-Murphy, Darge caught Pine-Murphy stranded on the far side and tapped the puck into a near empty net. The Brave and Ice then exchanged goals in quick succession, with Todd Graham and Matt Harvey scoring within mere seconds of each to take the teams tied 2-all into the first intermission. The Melbourne Ice emerged from the locker rooms clearly determined to extend their lead. It was Nicklas Dahlberg and then Sebastian Ottoson who answered the call, moving the Ice up 4-2 with eight on the clock. The Brave kept pace with the potent Ice attack and were rewarded with a late power play goal to Dominic Jalbert, which reduced the deficit to 4-3 going into the third period. With two goals to the Ice’s Chris Wong and Jason Baclig put the visitors at 6-3 lead with 8:07 left in the game. Despite the Brave working hard to close the gap, the Ice quelled each uprising and sealed their win in the capital to clinch the 2017 AIHL Minor Premiership. Melbourne Ice Head Coach Charles Franzen was pleased with his team’s ability to turn the weekend around. “We wanted to come back after yesterday because we thought that we were not playing as good as we can, he shared. “We were a little bit more focussed and I think we did what we had to today. We wanted to come home in one piece with no suspensions”. Having secured the 2017 AIHL Minor Premiers, Franzen has set his sights on the 2017 AIHL Finals. “We got the three points, we are top of the board, no one can move us away from there now. Everything that we do now is preparing for the Semi Final.” We hear you.
