In the Melbourne Pride Game donning rainbow coloured kit and supporter gear, home team the Melbourne Mustangs defeated the Newcastle Northstars 6-3. The Melbourne Mustangs' magnificent limited edition Pride Game jerseys were a crowd favourite, auctioned after the game. Photo: Tania Chalmers.
Mustangs’ Jamie Bourke strong performance contributed to his team’s success and resulted in a hat trick. The Northstars came out firing early: through strong possession they held the puck in their offensive zone, with Liam Manwarring, and one of the youngest on the team, scoring the first goal of the night and this first of his AIHL career. Bourke’s first goal came late in the first period with a bar down shot that went straight past Nick Mizen in nets, levelling the score at 1-1 heading into the intermission. The second period saw both teams move the puck end-to-end but on balance it was the Mustangs’ period, putting three goals on the scoreboard. Vaidim Vrjassov skated around behind the net to deflect the puck off the back of Mizen. The third goal for the Mustangs came from Pat O’Kane who was on an open back door and received a clean pass from Anton Kokkonen. Kokkonen then scored his own when he busted through for a shorthanded goal giving the mustangs a 4-1 lead over the struggling Northstars. Straight off the bat in the third period, Bourke scored the Mustangs 5th goal of the evening, with a ringer off the pipes. Yet the Northstar’s responded almost instantly with Felix Poulin snapping a bullet shot from the top, to give the Northstars a lift at 4-2. The Mustangs continued to outskate the Northstars and stood strong on their line. Taking a multitude of penalties the Northstars’ Poulin and Kerbashian combined to kill off penaltie and create chances to convert. This eventually came when Steven Kuhn knocked in their third goal off a rebound shot, taking the visitors to 3-5. But with only 1:29 left on the clock and an empty Northstars net, Bourke sealed the game at 3-6 and a hat trick. The Northstars and Mustangs meet again at 4pm Sunday July 23. Both teams will be hunting for regulation win competition points. With 30 points and sitting in fourth place, the Mustangs want to secure a Finals berth, while the Northstars are aiming to claw back the Mustangs’ gap, and keep their knife-edge battle with the Sydney Ice Dogs (also on 24 points but with two less games played) alive.
