The 2016 AIHL All-Star Weekend presented by APA Group taking place in Penrith June 11th-12th is less than two weeks away. Mike Schlamp, captain of the Sydney Bears, discusses playing in his second All-Star event. Q: You’re back to defend the title. What is your fondest memory from last year’s AIHL All-Star Weekend? Both days were a lot of fun. The All-Star Skills Competition was very relaxed and we got to see a lot of skill displayed by different players throughout the league. Q: What are you looking forward to most about the 2016 event? I’m really looking forward to the All-Star Game Sunday, June 12th. There are a lot of talented players coming to the event and it's going to be a fast paced, quality game. Q: Which skills contests do you think you’re best suited to? Is there a skills contest you fake an injury to avoid? Last year I got to participate in the hardest shot and shooting accuracy contests. They were pretty fun and I’m probably best suited to them. I think I would have to go down with a knee injury if I had to do the puck handling contest. ![]()
Mike Schlamp and Rob Haselhurst compete in the 2015 APA Group Breakaway Challenge Q: At dinner Saturday night, which AIHL player would you most like to meet? Why did you select this person? It will be great to catch up with all the guys from the National Men's Team. We had a great time in Mexico and had to leave pretty quickly the next day. I haven't had much of a chance to see a lot of the guys since. Q: Who should we invite to the 2017 AIHL All-Star Weekend as a celebrity coach? Why? I would like to see some of the guys from the Footy Show- maybe Beau Ryan. An episode of Beau Knows Ice Hockey would be hilarious. Q: What advice would you give to young Aussies wanting to play in the AIHL? Play as much as you can. When I was growing up in Canada we would play road hockey or be on the ice every day. During the winter I played on multiple teams. There are quite a few young players that have had the opportunity to play overseas and come back to Oz. There are lots of talented young players coming up which is awesome to see. Tickets for the 2016 AIHL All-Star Weekend are available at http://www.trybooking.com/JVIN. Come see the skill and personalities of the best hockey players ever assembled in Australia. Stars will compete for more than $25 000 in prizes in a series of skills competitions and an All-Game. |
