Forney for Perth |

As seven AIHL teams went to battle in the opening weekend of the season, the Perth Thunder made their presence known off the ice and announced the signing of import Michael Forney. “We couldn’t just sit by and let the rest of the league have their fun this weekend,” the Thunder said on their Facebook page Saturday night. Forney, an American professional ice hockey player who plays for the ECHL’s Colorado Eagles, is a big signing for the Thunder. ECHL is generally regarded as a tier below the American Hockey League. A third round NHL draft pick and a 2012-13 ECHL First Team All-Star, Forney is expected to instantly “cement himself as one of the most gifted young players to join the AIHL season”, the Thunder said. “Michael is closing out his ECHL and AHL seasons and will join Perth Thunder on the 3rd of May, just in time for our road trips to Newcastle and Sydney,” The Thunder said. “Signing Michael has been five months in the making with many late nights and early morning Skype calls,” Thunder coach Stan Scott said on the signing in his regular “Coach’s Corner” report. Scott went on to say: “Michael is not only a great player he is also a very nice young guy who is committed to help the Thunder in any way he can. And even though he has had an amazing and very busy season in the ECHL - just missing out on the top scorer - he has still found time to consult with me along the way, and above that he has stayed loyal to his word about coming here to Perth. “Choosing and then securing imports is the hardest part of this job. Melbourne Ice’s Andy Lamrock and Ian Webster taught me a very valuable lesson: Don’t just select good player’s select good citizens. “Last season we saw just that with Phil, Kenny, Aaron and Kiefer. They are great guys whose commitment to Perth Thunder will never be forgotten. I have ensured that we continue to look for those traits in the players joining the squad this season. Not just great players, but great citizens and ambassadors for this sport we all love! “People would not believe the depth we go to when researching players and then trying to secure deals with them. My North American scout and friend Bryan Elliot digs very deep and he is probably looking at next season already, his advice to me is invaluable, but even he was stunned I managed to sign a player like Michael Forney.” Scott went on to say he excited for the season ahead and believes the team can go far with not just the players working hard on the ice, but the great team of people they have working off the ice, including assistant coach Aaron Hoffman. “We have fantastic sponsors and incredible fans I just hope we can go one step further than last season and reward everyone’s loyalty,” Scott said. |
