CBR Brave triumphed over the Newcastle Northstars 5-4 in the shootout after a closely contested game on Sunday night at Hunter Ice Skating Stadium.
Former Northstar Brian Bales scored the shootout winner as the pace was frantic between the two teams with over 80 shots being recorded throughout the three periods of play.

The Northstars first game of the season again the Brave was always going to be an emotionally-charged bout, with the teams last meeting in the 2016 AIHL Final and the Brave having ex Newcastle captain Robert Starke as their head coach.
Even within the first minute, it was clear this was going to be a challenging game for both teams with Newcastle registering their first shot on goal just 14 seconds in.
The rivalry between the two teams became evident as the game wore on with the teams exchanging scoring chances, goals and penalties.
“It was very fast, but it had a lot of structure,” Newcastle Coach Andrew Petrie said post-game. “Both teams played incredibly well.”
With the Northstars down two goals midway through the second, an excellent move by Joe Harcharik to keep in puck on-side proved to be the momentum changer with resulting goal bridging the gap to one, and another goal just minutes later tied the score as the two teams headed into the second intermission.
The pace of the game continued to increase throughout the third with both teams exhibiting a high level of skill as they fought for possession of the puck and shooting chances.
“We had a great first period and third was a really evenly matched contest with them scoring the first goal and then we found a way to even it up” Brave Coach Rob Starke.
Starke was also pleased his team was able to take the shootout win, especially for former teammate Brian Bales.
“The pressure is on the goalies and it's a 50/50 chance, I'm really happy for Brian Bales to get the winner," Starke said. "He played for Newcastle for many years so was obviously it was a really special moment for him.”
The Brave will look to keep their unbeaten record alive against the Bears next Saturday, while Newcastle will look to rebound against the Ice next Saturday before a rematch with the Brave next Sunday.
