Sydney prepares for Women's Ice Hockey Finals
Thursday, March 9, 2017 - Submitted by Bernard McNamara

The Australian Women’s Ice Hockey League (AWIHL) Finals Series will be held this weekend at the Canterbury Ice Rink in Sydney. The two-day event will showcase the best of Australia’s women’s ice hockey with the rosters of all four teams packed with representatives from the 2017 Australian Women's World Championship team.

The Sydney Sirens go into the weekend as red-hot favourites having remained undefeated during the regular season.  The Sirens finished the 12 game season with nine regulation wins and three shootout wins.

The Sirens’ successful offense has been led by forward Sharna Godfrey, who tallied 27 points in 12 games (14 goals, 13 assists), while at the other end of the ice, the Sirens relied on stellar goal keeping from all three goaltenders: Alex Stefan, Sera Dogramaci and Ella Licari , each with save percentages above 92.4%.

The AWIHL Finals weekend gets underway from 5pm on Saturday 11th March with the first Semi-final featuring the top ranked Sydney Sirens and fourth-placed Adelaide Rush.

The hotly contested second Semi-final will follow at 7:30pm with second-placed Brisbane Goannas taking on third-placed Melbourne Ice. The last time these two teams met during the regular season was at a double header in Brisbane with both teams recording single-goal victories, so crowds at the Finals can expect a strong match-up.

On Sunday 12th march, a Bronze medal game between the third and fourth-ranked Finalists kicks off day two of the Finals Series at 4pm. The winner of each Semi-final will face-off in a winner-takes-all Gold Medal game at 6.30pm after which the Joan McKowen Memorial Trophy will be presented to the AWIHL 2017 Champions.
