The Adelaide Adrenaline finished the 2016 regular season as winners, defeating the Sydney Bears 3-2 at the Penrith Ice Palace on Sunday night.
The Adrenaline had a tough season, losing 12 one-goal games including four shootout losses, with the win adding a positive finish to the year.
Adelaide’s persistence throughout the match was rewarded in the third period when forward Darren Corstens scored twice and set up the game winner to seal a memorable win for the visitors.
Adelaide’s 2016 AIHL season has been a battle from the beginning, with speculation they may not filed a team due to rink issues, to a mid-season coaching change, the team has certainly faced and met adversity this year.
After the game, captain Greg Oddy reflected on one of his toughest seasons in the AIHL.
“By far the toughest season in the league, and certainly the most disappointing,” Oddy said. “We’ve missed finals a few times before, but it usually came down to the last couple of games, but this year we were eliminated about a month ago, which was very disappointing.”
Despite trailing the Bears for two periods and being outshot 31-26, Adelaide put it all on the line in the final period to clinch an unlikely victory.
“We came here tonight and we wanted to finish on a high,” Oddy said. “I’m really proud of the boys for digging deep in the third period and finding a way to win.”
The Bears got off to an ideal start, forward Nic Kawasaki scored on a breakaway, his 11th goal of the season, to send the home side to the break leading 1-0.
The second period was a tight checking affair as both sides were held scoreless.
Adelaide’s goalie Peter King was sharp while at the other end Bears rookie net minder James Downie turned away a number of the quality chances to preserve the Bears one-goal lead heading into the third.
With nothing to lose in the final period, Adelaide plied on the pressure and was rewarded when Darren Corstens broke through for his first of the night.
He scored again three minutes later and the Adrenaline took the lead with just over 15 minutes to play.
Cole MacMillan capitalised on a two-on-one breakaway to give the visitors a two-goal buffer with the clock winding down.
Bears forward Adrian Esposito was able to claw a goal back late in the final period, however Adelaide’s defence held on, denying the Bears a final win in front of their home fans.
“We had a few of lapses in concentration and that’s where they got a couple of goals,” Bears Captain Michael Schlamp said. “The boys battled hard, we were short on numbers, but really happy with the guy’s effort tonight.”
Schlamp reflected on what had been a promising year for a young Bears team and thanked the fans for their dedication and support throughout the season.
“This year was great, we had a lot of support from all the fans coming back to Penrith and we’ve been here a for a couple of years in a row now.”
“Next year there going to be some good players coming through, we’ve got Kimlin back in net and it’s going to be a good year in 2017,” Schlamp said.
