For the second time this season, Chris Kubara got the opportunity to cheer on his three sons in one go.
The Brave hosted the Ice Dogs on Saturday night where middle children Tyler and Casey, playing for the Brave, got to play against the youngest Kubara, Bayley, playing for the Dogs.
On the game overall, the Brave boys were mostly positive.
“It felt alright,” Tyler said of the game in which he scored a goal and two assists. “We sort of lost it at the end there and got them back in the game but besides that we had a good first period and it felt good to win.”
Casey, unfortunately nursing an injury, didn’t have a lot of game time but enjoyed the experience.
“I was kind of just there for moral support, helping my little brother,” the AIHL leading local point scorer said. “I think he played well. He got some ice time tonight, he did what he had to, he made a good two on one play and he even had a shot on goal, so it was good for him.”
The youngest Kubara has a lot on his plate at the moment. Along with his rookie AIHL season with the Ice Dogs where he’s played six matches, he is currently finishing the HSC, which he says is going well.
“I’m keeping on top of all my classes and I have trials coming up in a few weeks so that should be good,” he said.
While Chris of course supports all his sons, he knows he’s a Brave.
“I always go for the Brave,” Chris admits. “Last year when we had boys playing against each other, I would have both jerseys on. But coming here playing senior hockey, I always go for the Brave.”
“I hope Bayley doesn’t get hurt. I know a lot of the Dogs’ players so I get on well with them. But we’re Brave supporters.”
It was a busy night for Chris cheering on three of his four sons, but his practical thinking means he might be cheering all four at once soon.
“[Older brother] Toby is in the army; he plays hockey for the Defence Force,” Chris explained. “Toby is hoping to be transferred down to Canberra next year and we’ll see what happens from there. He may be able to train with the Brave but because he is playing with the Defence Force, I don’t know if they’ll give him a release to play for the Brave.”
“Bayley has been contracted in Salt Lake City in the States, he’ll go there. If Brave are interested, which I believe they are as we’re in discussions, then they may bring him out next year.”
“Fortunately we have the two level headed ones at present with the Brave, Tyler and Casey. When we get the other two, Toby and Bayley, we’ll have twice as many penalties, because they’re the hotheads. The brotherly love is very strong in our family and it will be a matter of if anybody touches anyone both Toby and Bayley will jump the boards.”
As for the boys, they say it’s more fun and games than rivalry.
“It’s good to play against them,” Bayley said. “It’s always tough but there’s always a bit of friendly banter. Sometimes they try and boss me around but I’m not so much their little brother anymore, I’m catching them size wise, so it’s not too bad.”
Though Casey and Tyler admit “Bayley’s obviously the youngest in the family so he cops it a little bit.”
