Sydney Bears defeated the Sydney Ice Dogs 7-2 at Penrith Ice Palace on Saturday night, claiming the first Battle of Sydney.
Having not defeated their cross-town rivals in the last eight meetings dating back to 2012, the Bears were too strong for the young Ice Dogs squad.
From the first puck drop, it was an almost continuous barrage of shots by the Bears at the Ice Dogs goalie Matt Grogan, who had to turn away some strong slap shots by Cameron Todd and Steven Adams.
It took five minutes for the home side to get on the board with former Ice Dog Patrick Ward combining with Cameron Todd and Michael Schlamp.
The Bears piled on two more through Saxon Air and Adrian Esposito to lead 3-0 but found themselves in penalty trouble toward the end of the period, giving the Ice Dogs a 5-on-3 opportunity.
However the Ice Dogs couldn’t open their account, heading into the first break at 3-0.
The second period brought nice hits by Lachlan Mckenzie and Cameron Todd and two more goals to import Mario Passarelli and Schlamp.
Despite copping a spray of ice in the face, Bears goaltender Kamil Jarina never flinched and remained an impenetrable wall as the Bears’ last line of defence.
With a 5-0 lead going into the third period, things started to get heated.
With both sides going down 5-on-3 at points early in the period, the crowd was baying for a goal.
It took until six-and-a-half minutes from time for the Ice Dogs to get on the board with Sean Hamilton scoring.
Following the goal, Luke Read took to the net.
At four minutes, Ice Dog Scott Clemie closed the gap to 5-2 but a one-timer from Schlamp and a power play goal to Cameron Todd assured the Bears' victory.
