Battle of Giants
Thursday, July 12, 2012 - Submitted by Erin Byrnes
It might only be July, but this weekend’s clash between the Melbourne Ice and the Newcastle North Stars has all the hallmarks of a finals encounter.

As far as hockey games go, it couldn’t get much bigger.

The Ice, defending AIHL champions, will make the trip to Newcastle to take on the North Stars for the first time since last year’s grand final.

Both are sitting atop their respective conferences and have ten wins to their name, making it the most highly anticipated match of the season – and potentially a grand final preview.

While the outcome of the game could go either way, one thing is for certain – this one is going to be an absolute barnburner.

It’s not just the fans that are jumping out of their skin in anticipation; it’s evident that Ice coach Paul Watson is just as pumped for the game as much as the supporters.

“It couldn’t be more exciting, and I’m sure the North Stars think the same,” he said.

“It’s going to be a great challenge for both teams.”

Watson said the game doesn’t so much shape as a season-defining game for his side, but more as a huge opportunity to test themselves against the other powerhouse of the competition.

“I think it’ll be closely fought,” he said.

“One thing they have is speed in transition; they can turn it on a dime and they execute.

“If we make the mistake we’ll be punished.”

The Ice will head into the game full of confidence after taking out last week’s inaugural Trans Tasman Champions League title.

The tournament also gave the Ice the chance to scout the North Stars without playing them.

However, Watson said while he was an interested onlooker at the North Stars games in Melbourne, he believes his side will come up against a drastically different outfit this week.

“We had a look but they were minus a few players,” he said.

“They’ll lift higher at home, there’s no doubt about it.”

Saturday’s game will give Melbourne insight into playing at Hunter Ice Skating Stadium, which was this week announced as the venue for the 2012 AIHL Finals.

“It’ll be good to ply our trade in Newcastle, and get a feel for what that’s like to play there,” Watson said.
