After last meeting two weeks ago the Newcastle Northstars knew that they would have to bring their best game both offensively and defensively to get the win over the Melbourne Mustangs.

From the start of the first period the Northstars came out firing on all cylinders. With early penalties being given to Hayden Sheard, Liam Manwarring and Zane Jones consecutively, meaning the Northstars had to kill 6 minutes of Mustangs power play.

Successfully killing the penalties, Zane Jones came back onto the ice to score the first goal of the night with assists going to Sam Lawson and Pat Nadin. Zane Jones didn’t waste any time in the second period, scoring in just 18 seconds to take the lead to 2-0. Tempers flared with Dave Ferrari and Melbourne Mustangs #21 Bradley Apps ending on the ice in a tussle.

The Melbourne Mustangs started to make a comeback in the third period scoring two goals in quick succession to take the score to 3-2 with the Northstars still just in the lead. However, Joe Harcharik and Richie Tesarik both scored ending the game with a 5-2 lead.

Two of the Northstars goals were short-handed, showing the strength the Northstars have in their forwards.

Dayne Davis was between the pipes for Saturday’s game and faced 36 shots, 19 in the last 20 minutes.

The last time these two teams met, the Mustangs dictated the pace of the game and played an incredibly fast game. The speed seemed to catch the Northstars by surprise. However, this time the Northstars were ready for the speed and played a very calm and controlled game ultimately earning them the three points.

The night marked a successful start for the Northstars media team with the new live and audio stream set up hailing success and exciting opportunities for the Northstars club.

The Northstars take on Perth Thunder for the first time on Sunday 10th June with the puck dropping at 4:00pm.
