Women's Ice Hockey Season Kicks Off
- Submitted by

This weekend the Australian Women’s Ice Hockey League (AWIHL or the A-Dub as many like to say) fires up for the launch of it’s 2017/2018 Season.

After the innaugural AIHL Women in Ice Hockey Summit the AIHL’s Lisa Martens caught up with the AWIHL’s Women’s Director, Kylie Taylor who gave us the low down into how the four teams (Adelaide Rush, Melbourne Ice, Sydney Sirens and the Brisbane Goannas) are shaping up. With the AW busy on and off the ice focused on growing the women’s game, fans can expect another exciting season.

Sydney Champs to open season

“The teams have been working hard throughout the winter months to secure their imports and lock in their lineups for the 2017/2018 AW Season”, said Taylor.

The season kicks off with two games today: Adelaide v Sydney and Melbourne v Brisbane, with the opening game hosted by reigning AW Champs, the Sydney Sirens.  The AW play a summer season with double-header weekends in Adelaide, Brisbane, Melbourne and Sydney from October to March.

“For the opening weekend the Adelaide Rush travel to Sydney to meet the 2017/18 Joan McKowen Champions – the Sydney Sirens,” said Taylor.

For those who didn’t get a chance to see the AWIHL 2016/2017 Championship game, the Sirens won a thrilling double overtime shootout against the Brisbane Goannas at Canterbury Ice Rink in March 2017.

“The Sirens will no doubt step back on to the rink with the confidence of securing the major and minor premierships last season”, remarked Taylor.

The Rush will be looking to show everyone the hard work they have put into their offseason.

“Fans should be excited to see the new imports who will make Adelaide their home for the next six months,” shared Taylor.

The opening Sydney game kicks off at Canterbury at 5pm. Tickets can be purchased online or at the door. The Sunday game is at 10am at the Liverpool Catholic Club in Liverpool.

Meanwhile in Melbourne

In Melbourne this weekend, 2016/17 silver medalists the Brisbane Goannas will meet Melbourne Ice, sister club for the Melbourne Ice AIHL team.

“The Goannas have had a long winter thinking about how incredibly close they came to clinching their first ever AWIHL Championship,” stated Taylor, “they’ll be rearing to go and ready to show Melbourne Ice they won’t go away.

At home for their season opener, the Ice return with some fresh new faces on their team as well the AW’s highest points scorer from last season, and star import, Christina Julien.

The match up between Goannas and Ice is set to be an exciting one considering how close all their battles were last season.

The first game is 5pm tonight Melbourne time, and the second game at 1.15pm Sunday 29 October. Grab your tickets at: http://www.obriengrouparena.com.au

Revamped digital home for the AW

The AW administration and volunteers have also been busy off season, with Kylie leading the development of the leagues’ revamped website www.awihl.org.au under the IHA site. Be sure to bookmark it!

Support the growth of the AW by having a browse around, discover your favourite AW team, and catch up on game results and player stats.

Also added to the AW’s scene is their new live stream platform where you can catch every AWIHL game live and free over summer.

There’s nothing better for a sport looking to grow then playing in front of big crowds, so whenever you can – get out to a game and cheer on your AW team.
