The Sydney Ice Dogs rebounded from a tough loss on Friday night to secure a crucial 4-2 win against the CBR Brave at the Phillip Swimming and Ice Skating Center on Saturday night.
The CBR Brave outshot the Ice Dogs 38 to 25, but Ice Dogs’ goalie Damien Ketlo was instrumental in denying the Brave by making a number of critical saves.

Sydney Ice Dogs’ Assistant Coach Chris Foster who stepped in for Chris Blagg this weekend, was pleased with the way the Ice Dogs rebounded.
“The guys played really, really well. Coming back off the loss last night to the Bears, they showed some true colors.
“It’s one game at a time,” Foster continued, “and if we can win every game, then happy days, but we’re going to give it a go.”
Prior to puck drop, the Brave Cave was witness to a ceremonial puck drop with a twist. As the Brave Cave welcomed team videographer Murray Barton to the ice, he turned and called for his partner, Mandi Webb to join him on the red carpet. As Mandi made her way to join Murray, he dropped to one knee and revealed a blue ring box with a shiny diamond inside. As the fans waited with baited breath, Mandi looked at Murray and said yes! In all the excitement, the ceremonial puck drop was bypassed and the game got underway.
Congratulations Murray and Mandi! The happy couple pose for a photo after becoming engaged.
The first period saw plenty of action each way, but neither team was able to capitalise in the early minutes. It wasn't until Ice Dogs’ Grant Toulmin served teammate Strat Allen with a cross ice tape-to-tape pass as Allen was streaked down the wing unmarked that the deadlock was broken. Allen made no mistake as he walked in on Aleksi Toivonen in nets and shelved a wrist shot over Toivonen’s shoulder, to give the visitors a 1-0 lead.
The Brave didn’t take long to respond as Jan Safar fired his signature blue line slap shot on the power play – only for Ketlo to shut the door. But Ketlo wasn’t able to get all of it. Stephen Blunden found the loose puck behind Ketlo and tapped it in to bring the home side back 1-1 with 6:53 left in the period.

The Brave struck again on a power play, this time through Wehebe Darge, who was left unmarked at Ketlo’s back and cleaned up Jan Safar’s rebound to put the score at 2-1.
It didn’t take long for the Ice Dogs to respond though: Scott Stephenson pounced on a defensive miscue and made no mistake in beating Toivonen and bring the score level at 2-2, just 18 seconds later, with 3:34 left in the period.
The Ice Dogs weren’t done with the first period though, as Stephen Johnston took the puck in the offensive zone, deking and dangling through every challenger, before sending a shot through Toivonen’s five hole to take back the lead, 3-2 into intermission.
The second period was filled with end-to-end hockey, big hits and plenty of opportunities for both benches, but neither team was able to finish. Enter then: Tomas Manco, who stripped a Brave defender of the puck and dished it to Grant Toulmin, who shelved a wrist shot over Toivonen’s blocker with 47 seconds remaining in the second to extend the Ice Dogs’ lead 4-2.
The Brave looked to battle back in the third period, and threw everything at the Ice Dogs and Damien Ketlo, but the visitors were more than up to the task and the home side unable to break through.
Though the Ice Dogs goaltender played a key role in the outcome, CBR Brave Head Coach Rob Starke lamented his team’s missed chances.
“We had some great opportunities, it wasn’t so much a case of him [Ketlo] stopping us, but we kept missing, said Starke.
“We came around in the third period, but it was a classic case of too little, too late, but I’m sure we will bounce back.”
The Brave now turn their sights to a crucial double header at home as they welcome the league leading Melbourne Ice – a game some punters believe could be a grand final match up –while the Ice Dogs turn their attention to the Melbourne Mustangs at the Macquarie Ice Rink next Saturday night.
