The Adelaide Adrenaline dug deep and shutout the Sydney Ice Dogs, 2-0 on Sunday night at the Macquarie Ice Rink. In a very physical match-up, the Adrenaline jumped out to a two goal lead and defended hard in the final period to secure an all-important road win.
“To be a defence first team - That’s was the game plan today” said Adelaide Coach Sami Mantere.
“All the guys bought into it and it was a great effort at both ends of the ice.”

Adelaide where first to get on the board, forward Cam Critchlow picked off a wayward pass in the Ice Dogs end to streak in on goalie Damien Ketlo and burry the breakaway chance, giving his side a 1-0 lead at the first intermission.
In the second period, AIHL legend Greg Oddy added to his impressive career totals with a power play goal to the double the visitors lead heading into the final period.
Both teams upped the physicality in the third period and tempers flared when Ice Dogs forward, Todd Stephenson was sent crashing into the boards head first after a hit from behind, from Adelaide defenseman Ben Gilbert.
Gilbert was given a match penalty for the illegal hit and the in ensuing scum of players, Ice Dogs defenceman Rory Rawliyk was also ejected from the game for roughing.
Despite five power play opportunities, including a 5-on-3 man advantage in the final period, the Ice Dogs couldn’t find a way past Adrenaline goalie Matt Murphy, who stopped all 32 shots on the night to record his first career AIHL shutout.

“Matt (Murphy) was great again tonight” said Mantere
“I think our penalty killing has been pretty good the last month or so, even though we’ve be struggling with the results our penalty kill has been pretty good”
The Adrenaline head home, to prepare for a big weekend of hockey when the host the CBR Brave for an all-important double header on 23-24 July. The Brave will be desperate for competition points, having only secured two points from five games in the month of July.
The Ice Dogs will be back in action this Sunday, when the host the league leading Melbourne Ice. The Ice Dogs currently sit in fifth spot on the AIHL ladder and are in danger of losing touch with top four after back to back losses at the Macquarie Ice Rink.
