The Perth Thunder defeated the Sydney Ice Dogs 2-1 at the Perth Ice Arena on Saturday night, in the first game of this weekend’s double-header and hang onto third place on the AIHL ladder.
A pair of goals to Thunder forward Jessyko Bernard was the key difference between the two teams, as both goalies tuned away a number of quality chances to keep their sides in a low-scoring contest.

The Ice Dogs opened the scoring in the first period with forward Grant Toulmin putting his name on the score sheet to give the visitors an early 1-0 lead. The 6’5 import forward has found his scoring touch in recent weeks: recording his 7th goal in just four games.
However the Thunder answered right back, when Bernard scored his first of the night, linking up with fellow imports Christian Ouellet and Benjamin Breault to send the game to the first intermission tied 1-1.
The second period was a much tighter affair, as both goalies asserted their dominance in the game to keep it a 1-1 contest heading into the third period. Ice Dogs goalie Damien Ketlo was on top his game again, making 31 saves on the night, while at the other end Peter Di Salvo was solid as always, stopping 22 shots.

Bernard broke the deadlock at the mid-way point of the third period to give the home side a 2-1 advantage. The Thunder crowd were kept on the edge of their seats as the home side had to kill off a late penalty to Jonathon Bremner, given 2 minutes for hooking.
With the clock winding down, the Ice Dogs were unable to find an equalizer and the Thunder secured a valuable three points and their 7th win of the season.

Both sides will be back in action on Sunday night: a Thunder win would elevate the team to second on the AIHL, while the Ice Dogs would have to rely on the other results going their way to stay inside the top 4.
