Tommy Powell hits 150 as Ice remain undefeated
Monday, June 19, 2017 - Submitted by Courtney Fitzsimmons

The Melbourne Ice remained undefeated on Saturday night following their 6-3 victory over Perth Thunder at the O’Brien Group Arena. The home-town fans where treated a special milestone for their #TommyWatch.

In the first game of the Ice v Thunder double-header, local favourite Tommy Powell of Melbourne Ice put the first points on the board and in doing so recorded his 150th AIHL goal. Powell becomes the fourth player in AIHL history to reach 150 career goals.

Powell has over 300 AIHL games under his belt and during his career the speed forward has scored 398 points (150 goals, 248 assists) at just over 1.3 points per game. His most successful season came in 2015 when he scored 52 point (21 goals, 31 assists) in just 28 games.

The lift the Thunder needed came from Breault leveling the score at 1-1, however the Ice’s Kristoffer Backman responded with another to finish the first period in the lead.

While both teams returned to the ice focused and contesting the puck with end-to-end hockey neither could convert and the score remained at 2-1 for most of the second period.

With 1:50 left in the second period, Breault scored his second goal of the game, with assists from Per Daniel Goransson and Christian Ouellet and tied the teams 2-2 at the break.

Early in the third period the Ice took control of the game: Lliam Webster came out firing, scoring Melbourne’s third goal and was followed shortly after by Viktor Gibb’s to widen their lead 4-2.

Towards the end of the third Gibbs and Ottosson pulled the Ice ahead to 6-2 and Perth showing the never give up attitude they bring to the ice but it wasn’t enough to pull them back into the game.

Forward Viktor Gibb’s had a three point game (1 goal, 2 assists) and leads all Melbourne Ice scorers with 17 points for the season.
