The Sydney Ice Dogs took down the Newcastle Northstars 4-2 in their second matchup of the season at Hunter Ice Skating Stadium on Sunday night.
The Northstars, who suffered a 4-1 loss the previous night to the Perth Thunder, looked to split the weekend, while Rory Rawlyk of the Ice Dogs completed a hat-trick with just over a minute left on the clock.
“I feel really good actually, it was a good win.” Ice Dogs head coach Chris Blagg said. “It was momentum, the boys really went hard, and they have been working hard at practice."
"There was a bit of a scramble at the end there and the boys put their bodies on the line to get us over the line.”
Andrew Petrie's team suffered back-to-back regulation losses, but the Northstars head coach felt as though his team played well enough to win.
“It’s hard to be disappointed in their effort when they put up 50 shots and ran into a very hot goaltender.” Petrie said. “As far as effort every shift I was really happy with that, but we just couldn’t buy enough goals to get the (win).”
The Northstars got off to a strong start with Jonathan Ruth scoring his first AIHL goal to send the Newcastle side into the intermission with a one goal lead.
Joe Harcharik followed up with Newcastle's second goal of the night in the second period putting the home side up 2-0, however that would be all for Newcastle as Ice Dogs goaltender Damian Ketlo shut the door for the rest of the game.
Scott Stephenson would eventually get the Ice Dogs on the board in the late in the second with Rory Rawlyk tying the game up at 2-2 just minutes later.
With Sydney up by one goal halfway through the third a wide open Ice Dogs net when Ketlo found himself wildly out position saw an opportunity for Newcastle to get back in the game.
However the Northstars were unable to convert and the despite the resulting scramble in front of the net the game the score remained the same, with numerous Ice Dogs skaters blocking shots in an effort to maintain the the lead.
Rawlyk eventually sealed the win with an top shelf empty net goal with just over a minute left in the third to complete the hat trick, his first in the AIHL.
The Ice Dogs return home next Saturday, and will have their form tested by the CBR Brave, while the Northstars travel to Adelaide to take on the Adrenaline.
