CBR Brave Head Coach Rob Starke, has offered up a prized possession to raise funds for the Starlight Children’s Foundation – his Australian Mighty Roos jersey, signed by Wayne Gretzky.
The Team Australia jersey with its Mighty Roo emblazoned on the front, worn by Starke at the 2010 IIHF World Championships and signed by the greatest NHL player of all time Wayne Gretzky, is a rare combination of ice hockey iconology.

Starke has built a reputation as one of the most respected figures in the AIHL. His 12-season AIHL playing career spanned four AIHL Goodall Cup Championships with the Newcastle Northstars including 2015 as Captain, and three years representing Australia at the IIHF World Championships. The green and gold jersey up for auction was worn by Starke in the 2010 Division 2, Group A Silver medal winning campaign.
The signed piece of hockey history forms part of the Starlight Foundation’s Five Chefs Dinner event in Sydney with the auction open to all bidders online. The Starlight Foundation remains an organisation close to the Starke family’s heart after receiving its support when the family needed it most.
“My son Ben was diagnosed with kidney cancer in 2013 when he was just two years old, said Starke.
“After chemotherapy treatment and several surgeries he is currently in remission. He turned six last month and is still being monitored but fingers crossed the worst is behind us.”

The opportunity to meet Wayne Gretzky in 2016 at the USA v Canada Ice Hockey Classic came about due to the Starlight Foundation.
“We received a telephone call from the Starlight Children's Foundation offering us tickets to the game in Sydney. We then had the opportunity to meet the players and also the tour Manager Kerry Goulet of Stop Concussions, who organised for us to meet Wayne Gretzky. The entire experience was an absolute thrill for the Starke family.
The decision to donate one of his Team Australia World Championship jerseys signed by Wayne Gretzky to the Starlight Foundation was an easy one said Rob.
“Starlight Wishes enable children and families to smile during extremely challenging times, we will continue to support the Foundation in the years to come.”
