The Melbourne Mustangs have registered their first win of the 2017 AIHL seaosn with a commanding 9-5 victory over the Adelaide Adrenaline at O'Brien Group Arena on Sunday night.
A five-point night from Maxime Langelier-Parent (one goal, four assists) as well as four-point nights from Jamie Bourke and Anton Kokkonen propelled the win as Nichola Novysedlak started his second-straight game, making 29 saves to record the win.
Sean Greer led the way for the visitors, registering four points (one goal, three assists) while Greg Oddy found himself on the score sheet three times and Peter King made 28 saves.
The scores were tied at 1-1 after 10 minutes with goals to Michael McMahon and Cameron Critchlow, before the Mustangs assumed control with late goals through Brendan McDowell, Bourke and Langelier-Parent extending the lead to 4-1 after the first period of play.
The Mustangs blew the score out to 6-1 with two more goals to begin the second period, before the Adrenaline clawed it back with three straight of their own to reduce the score to 6-4 with just 14 seconds remaining in the second period.
A fightback looked possible, but a very late goal by Pat O'Kane stretched the difference back to three goals (7-4) at the second intermission.
Goals to McDowell, Oddy and Matthew Beattie took the final score in the game to 9-5, handing the Mustangs their first win and continuing Adelaide's Jekyll-and-Hyde start to the season.
The Mustangs stay at home to play the Melbourne Ice next Saturday, while the Adrenaline will hit the road again to face the Bears in Sydney.
